Never Ask Us if We're Hungry -- The Answer's Always No
There are three of us here and for many years, none of us ever got hungry. When our brains would turn to mush, when our faces would go numb, and we would start the invisible vibration which is the signature dance of ME/CFS, we knew we needed to eat.

Thanks for your note I.R. Baboon. I didn't see it until too late, but maybe it will help someone else, or me if I need to repost.

I seem to tolerate Folinic Acid (as Calcium Folinate) OK. I am trying it again, but NOT as part of any methylation protocol....(so no B12 supplements & no methylfolate, as I don't tolerate these in any doses). Been 5 days & so far no apparent side effects.

Thanks Meryl! I've added you below. Your SHMT1 is normal, so you'd be less inclined to have a problem with folinic acid, in theory (I think). So that's consistent. It's interesting that you have three (3) results no one else does, so far.

Hi nandixon, after a week on Folinic Acid I think I am becoming intolerant. Today I feel dehydrated & have weak muscles all over. (It's always hard to say if a symptom is the illness or a reaction) I'm going to stop taking the Folinic Acid.

Well I have my Yasko gene map and I am supposed to take folinic acid according to my doctor and it does not bother me. I do not know how to convert a Yasko panel to a 23andme reportout. I do not have anywhere near the exhaustion issues many of you have but I do have that PEM thing. My family (elders) have seemed to have chronic fatigue most of their lives however undiagnosed due to blaming it on diabetes (yet I have ALWAYS been aware that diabetes does not necessarily make one fatigued and I know diabetics who join cycling marathons etc regularly). I do not know how you distinguish someone who has ME from someone who has the genes for it but beat it through supplements (in other words I seem to have all the bad genes y'all have times 3). So I don't know if you want to look at my genes but I take Thorne Basic B which has a bit of folinic acid in it 2x/day and that works for me.

I was a very sickly kid despite my mother becoming an armchair nutritionist on account of me. I am still very sickly but now I know what to take when to ward most stuff off. As long as I take my vitamins I am simply a bit clumsy but not unfunctional, have a bit of PEM but am on par with others who do not take vitamins or eat too well. (I often think what powerhouses THEY could be if they would just have a care!)

Hope I can find this thread when I get my 23andme results back. Nice potentially useful info.

Someone also created a spreadsheet that listed everyones methylation pathways results which was interesting to see so many with similar values (high/low). Rivka was on the sheet, I wonder if that spreadsheet is still being kept up to date.

With the 23andMe price reduction I expect in about 3-4 weeks there will be a lot more info to add to this list, might have to make a spreadsheet.

I know very little about SNPs because I've never been tested, but since I'm learning about methylation and giving advice to others I decided to start learning some. I thought it was the MTHFR SNP where folinic acid and folic acid blocked methylfolate, but then I saw Rich's thread about MTHFS regarding Freddd's situation with folinic acid.
    http://forums.phoenixrising.me/index.php?threads/attention-freddd-mthfs-deficiency.11524/

I have a few questions about this:
    • So what exactly is the difference between MTHFR and MTHFS in regards to folic acid and/or folinic acid blocking methylfolate?
    • With the MTHFR SNP, is it just that they have converting folinic acid and folic acid into methylfolate and not that they block methylfolate?
    • And is done by blocking the DHFR enzyme or is there another mechanism involved in this process?
    • Also, about what percentage of the people here have a problem with folic acid and/or folinic acid? Based on the results of his 2009 methylation study which included a small amount of both folic and folinic acid Rich seemed to think that a small amount of both wouldn't cause problems for most of the people here, but I would like to know others' opinions besides Rich's on this.
Also, dbkita seemed to think that the folinic acid in plant folate was different than supplemental folinic acid (I assume he menas more than just vegetables such as beans, grains, fruit, nuts, and seeds). I'm curious what other people think of this theory as far as a distinction between plant folate and supplemental folinic acid or folic acid.

I don't think folinic acid is a problem for me, but it's early days.

Thank you for organizing this one!

Did you ever figure out what was going on? I'm not too familiar with folate deficiency symptoms. Those do sound like symptoms of low potassium though. I don't know if folinic acid alone is enough to cause low potassium though since you say you weren't taking any other methylation supplements. If you don't have a problem with folinic acid though you would be converting some to methylfolate which the only reason why I mention it even though it seems unlikely.

Not sure if anyone is still looking into this but thought I'd add mine in. I don't know if I really have any negative affects from Folic Acid. I've never taken it in high doses but my serum folate levels have always been high which makes me think I have a hard time converting it.
