    Hello!

I was "fired" by my last internist when I became disabled. He said he "was not qualified to treat my condition" despite the fact that I told him my ME was covered by my ME specialist, and that I just needed the same basic primary care that anyone else needs. This happened at Duke. There was a lot more to it, he was very abusive and when I tried to report it, they stalled and stalled and eventually dropped the case. I have not had a PCP for a long time now, as I am now leery of anyone and have found that NC is a very hostile state towards ME, both doctors who treat it and patients who have it.

Does anyone know of an ME-friendly internist or family practice doctor to manage my primary care in the Durham or Chapel Hill area? I would greatly appreciate any and all suggestions! Thanks!

Funny (or not so! :cautious:) I tried to get help at Duke when I was a student there many moons ago. What did I get? A prescription for dexadrine!

OMG!! That sounds just like Duke! It is heartbreaking to think how far they set us all behind with their attitude, as they are considered a leader in the medical field! I see Drs. Lapp and Black, and Dr. Lapp said that although he is an associate professor of medicine at Duke, they will not allow him to talk about his experiences with ME/CFS at all, period, with the medical students. Aaarghhh!! It is going to take years (decades) to work this toxic influence out of the medical system here.

    hi Amy
how terrible. ironicly i just had a similar experience. i am here in durham temporarily and recently had to see a dr regarding sleep medications due to CFS. it was a horrible experience!!!! the dr was sooo dismissive of CFS. just no knowledge about it or belief in it at all. grrrr!!!!!!

I am so sorry to hear that!! It is absolutely ridiculous, especially when all you needed was help for sleep, which is an incredibly common need even among the general population! In that situation, the doctor should have at least treated you as he would any of the many others who I am sure consult him or her for sleep problems. Here's to a good night's rest!
