Never Ask Us if We're Hungry -- The Answer's Always No
There are three of us here and for many years, none of us ever got hungry. When our brains would turn to mush, when our faces would go numb, and we would start the invisible vibration which is the signature dance of ME/CFS, we knew we needed to eat.

Dr. Vermeulen R.C.W. from the CFS Centre in Amsterdam (Holland) seems to be suspended starting 12-01-2011. http://www.bigregister.nl/doc/pdf/2011-01-13 Actueel overzicht bevoegdheidsbeperkingen_24713.pdf

In 2010 CFS patients collected 30 000 euros ($ 40 000) for Dr. Vermeulen R.C.W. to help support his gene research in ME/CFS. Another serious blow to the Dutch ME/CFS community, previous one being Dr. Coucke en Dr. Uyttersprot getting a 635 000 euro ($844 000) fine for treating ME/CFS patients with Intravenous immunoglobulin and intravenous nutrients. That's all info i currently got on this issue.

This is outrageous. I know the man and he is one of the few 'good' doctors we have in The Netherlands. I would love to read a motivation on his suspension.

At the moment, we have no further information, except that the CVS/ME Centrum is in the middle of a reorganization. I'll try and make inquiries tomorrow.

OK, we found the case. It involves a complaint by a single patient and is unrelated to his work on ME/CFS as such, so no witch hunt. Nonetheless, this is a heavy blow to the Dutch patient community.

The accusations are quite serious and involve sexual harassment. If they are proven to be true, it would mean a big disappointment, and I sympathise with the (alleged) victims.

Frank, maybe a change of the topic-title is appropriate.

Please can you delete this message svp? As a patient of one of the two Belgian doctors, I'm shocked that you compare the suspension of dr. Vermeulen with the belgian situation!!
    thanks a lot,

    Pretty much so, Cort.

Note that Coucke and Uyttersprot are Belgian, not Dutch, but we don't even have our own Couckes and Uyttersprots that can be fined.

No, not since Vermeulen has been suspended.

Coucke and Uyttersprot are clearly victims of a witchhunt. They are not private practitioners (in which case nothing would have happened) but work within the national social security system. They applied for, and received, permission to prescribe these intravenous treatments. The authorising body changed its mind and now wants them to reimburse the total cost of the treatment plus a 100% fine. They've introduced an appeal.

What's happened in the Netherlands with dr.Vermeulen is an entirely different story. Sexual involvement with a fragile patient, with a few seriously aggravating circumstances. The Dutch Disciplinary Board has published all the details of the case and the Dutch ME community is still reeling from the shock.

Thanks Sacha for explaning this!!! This is the truth about drs Uyttersprot and Coucke in Belgium!

Two Belgian doctors who treated thousands of CFS/ME patients in recent years have been fined by the Administrative Court of Inami, the Belgian National Health Insurance Institute to a penalty of more than 500,000. The Drs Francis Coucke, endocrinologist, and Anne Marie Uyttersprot, neuropsychiatrist, must not only repay the prescribed medication but were also fined more than 100%. The verdict was in absentia because both doctors act of revenge by the court. One of the doctors- magistrates, the chairman of the CVS group of Inami, prof. Baeyens, withdrew. The other issue was a doctor- magistrate, Dr. Bernard Debbaut, which sits at the Insurance Committee and the Technical Medical Board of Inami, who refused to withdraw. The conviction of two doctors was before the investigation that preceded the lawsuit, announced by the Christian and Socialist Health Insurances (CM & SM).

The case came at the instigation of the Health Insurance CM who in recent years faced with growing discontent of its members who refuse the imposed CBT psychotherapy for the treatment of CFS, such as those in the so-called reference centers is applied. An internal report of Inami has previously shown that behavioral therapy is unsuccessful. A report from the independent Knowledge Centre KCE later confirmed that outcome.

Both doctors are committed to not accept the verdict and will appeal. "This case is a put-up job," says Dr. Uyttersprot. "We have rigorously applied the criteria of Inami. In contradiction with official beliefs we established that many patients suffer from severe comorbid disorders. We have done no more than our duty. In no way have enriched ourselves. "
"It is proven that a physician in this country has no chance of a fair hearing," says Dr. Coucke. " Inami, which is controlled by the largest health insurance company in the country, CM, is judge and party and not even hiding it. We have documentary evidence that the conviction was tied. The so-called investigation by Inami was a joke. "

Despite the appeal the verdict can be executed immediately.

Earlier, the CM field a complaint with the National Order of Physicians, who dismissed the case.
This verdict also creates a precedent because it means that Belgian doctors now not only have to repay unfair fees received but now post factum required to bear the costs of so called falsely medication of their patients. The requirements of the two doctors were however always approved by the medical officer of the health insurance.

Note that the CVS/ME Centrum Amsterdam has reopened. Dr. Vermeulen is still involved. However, patients now need to pay for his consults from their own pockets, as health insurance no longer covers it.

It seems that whatever happens, patients will always lose.
