Low Neutrophils

    I'm just wondering if Neutropaenia/Neutropenia (low Neutrophils) is a common finding in M.E./CFS?

    If so, anyone have any theories on this?

    I have tried doing an archive search but so many irrelevant (to the topic) posts have come up I don't know where to locate any pertinent information.

    Hello,I'm not sure if it is a common finding or not, but it is an issue I've struggled with. Rich V explains it as a folate and/or B12 deficiency due to blocks in the methionine synthase enzyme. I was also reading today that the thyroid hormone modulates DNA transcription which creates RNA from DNA. So I wonder if a thyroid deficiency could result in neutropenia too. Interestingly enough, a woman on the cfsfmexperimental list did get her WBC up with thyroid medication.

    I've been wondering the same thing since I've had low neutrophils starting years before I got CFS. I also am hypothyroid but take hormone. I asked my doctor about it, and she said some people with CFS have neutropenia, but a lot don't.

    Count me among the people with CFS with low WBC caused by low neutrophils. I'm XMRV positive. I also have a borderline low platelet count and elevated mean platelet volume (MPV), if you're interested in other hematological findings.

    I'm one of those with frequent mild to mod. neutropenia. My CFS specialist speculates that may be due to chronic viral infection.

    Thanks for the suggestion and the link to that site! Really cool stuff. I haven't been tested specifically for either, however in the last few weeks I've begun high doses of methylcobalamin, adenosylcobalamin, methylfolate, and folinic acid, so I will definitely be interested to see whether there are any positive changes in my next blood test.
