Do these T cells have to be targeting something could they just be activated

I think if my biochem serves me correctly, T cells are activated by cells which can have antigen/ antigen fragments on the surface such as macrophages, b cells etc.

So as far as I know, they have to be activated by something, and that can vary depending on what antigen(s) we are talking about. Here, I think the hope is that it may be a specific response/antigen(s) etc that can be back-traced, so to speak.
