The 5k Fun Run/ Walk and Roll raises money for UC San Diego’s Robert Naviaux, a physician-scientist who specializes in mitochondrial disease. Wheelchair users are welcome.

Mitochondria are cellular components that have their own DNA and replicate independently of cells. They produce 90 percent of the body’s energy, and diseased mitochondria produce a variety of illnesses. The brain, heat, muscles and lung, which are especially energy-intensive organs, are most vulnerable.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is a mitochondrial disease, according to research, some of it coming from Naviaux and colleagues. They have developed a method to detect the chemical signature of CFS, which affects up to 2.5 million Americans.

Each cell contains many mitochondria, and they may include a mixture of diseased and healthy ones. The proportion of diseased mitochondria to healthy ones causes the diseases to vary in severity.

Looks like there is a fundraiser for Dr Naviaux's mitochondria clinic. CFS is mentioned in the article, but it seems like the fundraising might be more for regular mitochondrial disorders.

I was going to post this after May 2. Money will go towards ME/CFS too and in a very promising way. I spoke to someone in his office a month ago. I don't remember the exact details of what she said and wanted to talk to her again before I posted this so the information would be more precise. I'll see if I can get hold of her this week to get more information.

Please designate #3. Team RIGGS if you can donate. https://act.ucsd.edu/mitowalkandroll5k/add
It's the ME/CFS team.

The form is quite confusing. Does it ask for payment details after you click continue?

Hi,@hixxy. It is confusing regarding donations. I was led to believe this was the form but may have it wrong. Maybe there's another form or way for donations.

I'm not sure if it asks for payment details after you click continue. I hope so.

I'll try to get more details this week.

Foggy me. It does look like it's the form to donate.
Can't Walk and Roll with us but still want to give? Enter your donation amount in the "additional donation" box below. If you're donating towards a team don't forget to select the team name.

Hi, Everyone. The run is this weekend. The funds support Dr Naviaux's mitochondria clinic. This lab is planning a lot of big things and like all labs needs more funding. Supporting mitochondrial research is supporting us. His focus is on helping us.

Please if you can, donate to #3. Team RIGGS:
https://act.ucsd.edu/mitowalkandroll5k/add
It's the ME/CFS team.

If you don't want to donate to Team Riggs in the race, because you want to make sure your donations goes only specifically to ME/CFS research here's the link to his lab, then click on ME/CFS research:

http://naviauxlab.ucsd.edu/support/

Or go directly to ME/CFS research to make your donation:

Thank you for doing what you can, if you can, and getting others to donate too if you are able! :)

Hi, Everyone. An edit to the above. Just found out today is the last day to register for the run or to donate to Team Riggs (ME/CFS team). https://act.ucsd.edu/mitowalkandroll5k/add

You can still donate to Dr. Naviaux's research anytime for mitochondrial diseases or specifically for ME/CFS. His lab is planning big things to help us.
