This establishes FIU as the academic partner for the multi-system treatment and research center that will lead to improving the quality of life of NeuroEndocrineImmune diseases in Florida, the US and around the globe. The NEI CenterTM will be in the FIU Department of Molecular Microbiology and Infectious Diseases at the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. "This is a milestone in the history and progress in the treatment of NEI diseases," said Dr. Kenneth J. Friedman, PANDORA's Vice-President and Public Policy Chair. "It is a testimonial to the power of the patient community in obtaining the medical and supportive care that patients need. We look forward to providing similar satellite centers in other locations in the U.S." In 2010, the New Jersey legislature passed a resolution in support of the NEI CenterTM. Creating a center that will provide the best in clinical care, cutting-edge research and assistance with accessing social services for multi-system diseases has been a PANDORA project for years. NEIDs (NeuroEndocrineImmune diseases) include ME/CFS (myalgic encephalomyelitis / chronic fatigue syndrome), fibromyalgia, chemical sensitivities / environmental illness, chronic Lyme disease and Gulf War illnesses. "I am extremely excited that FIU and our department will be in the forefront of this field of medicine that has garnered so much national attention," said Kalai Mathee, PhD, Founding Chair of the FIU Department of Molecular Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. "Physician training and updating in the new science of these diseases are crucial because effective treatments can restore quality of life and increase the life span for NEI disease patients." This endowment means that the FIU Department of Molecular Microbiology and Infectious Diseases will house the first NEI CenterTM as an institute in the Herbert Wertherim College of Medicine. The goal now is to bring in researchers and physicians to staff the future clinic. PANDORA will now pursue more funding, through grants, partnerships with government agencies, and private and corporate donors. Setting up a clinic early in this process will be important for the NEI CenterTM as it will provide patient care and will allow this component of the NEI CenterTM to be financially self-sustaining as it gets off the ground. The philosophy behind the NEI CenterTM is that biomedical and translational research in any of the chronic NEI diseases will advance understanding and progress in the other NEI diseases. Using the latest technology, the NEI CenterTM will be the first of its kind, a multi-system and multi-disease research and clinical care facility that was initiated by a patient-driven organization dedicated to improving the life of those with NEIDs. "The timing of this development could not be better as May is International NEIDs Awareness Month," said Marly Silverman, PANDORA founder. "Recent research has brought a better understanding of these illnesses, and I am pleased to see Florida will be prominent in turning that knowledge into improved patient care for the estimated 20 million Americans suffering with NEIDs." Recent interest from universities, the Canadian government and the US Department of Defense have accelerated momentum in research that will translate into improving the lives in this medically under-served patient community.
