In a nutshell:

Methanol is transformed into formaldehyde
Formaldehyde (mitochondria toxin) decreases ATP production
Formaldehyde in the cell causes methylation of the cell proteins
Formaldehyde reacts with a protein and the immune system reacts to this formaldehyde modified protein causing an autoimmune reaction

i think formaldehyde could be in like furniture and carpet glue, plastics
