Here's a reminder of the nature of the proposed gut microbiome study by Dr Lipkin.
The text is provided by The Center for Infection and Immunity.
This is not a new description, but many of the project's supporters may not have seen it.

“We are actively seeking funds to support comprehensive studies into the role of the bacteria, fungi and viruses in CFS. Research into the human microbiome is an exciting new pathway to advance our understanding of the role that over a trillion microorganisms in our body play in health and in the development of disease. An altered microbiome may cause not only gastrointestinal problems but also immunological and brain dysfunction. As the world’s largest and most advanced academic center in microbe discovery, identification and diagnosis, the Center for Infection & Immunity at Columbia University is optimally positioned to embark upon the challenge to determine how bacteria, fungi, viruses and toxins (and the immune response to them) contribute to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME). Discoveries in these areas may point us toward treatment strategies that reduce vulnerability through exclusion diets, probiotics or drugs.”

Mindy Kitei has interviewed Dr Lipkin:

"Candid Conversation with Dr. Ian Lipkin" Mindy Katei interviews Dr Lipkin

And Cort Johnson has discussed the interview here:

Both of these are superb - highly recommended.

BTW, I'd be curious to know what all those countries are where people are donating! A little Facebook item there, maybe.

Great story here on FB:

This is Brooke and Belinda (who has been diagnosed with ME/CFS and fibromyalgia since 2001) - they have recently set a book stall at their local community's annual 'Booktown' event in Australia and raised $400 by selling books for Dr. Ian Lipkin's microbiome study. Thank you very much - what an inspiration you are!

For those who missed it, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health published an article about this patient-led crowdfunding campaign to mark May 12th Awareness Day:

More Than a Gut Feeling
Chronic fatigue patients raise funds for microbiome study by Ian Lipkin
http://www.mailman.columbia.edu/news/more-gut-feeling

It starts:
"May 12, 2014—Sarah*, an MIT computer science grad, first got sick while working on a software project for an international NGO. Severe cognitive and gastrointestinal symptoms were the first sign of what would eventually be diagnosed as chronic fatigue syndrome. “I went from running a triathlon to being unable to sit up for more than 15 minutes,” she remembers. “I had a promising career working and volunteering in areas that I was passionate about, and now my life has primarily become about survival.”"

I see Norwegian blogger Jorgen Jelstad has covered the crowdfunding campaign - please give him some traffic (I hope you'll get an auto-translation!) - here's the start:

I've written a lot about the scientist Ian Lipkin involvement in ME / CFS on this blog lately , and it's simply because never before has a more prominent researcher inserted impetus to find the answer to ME - Riddle . Columbia University 's Center for Infection and Immunity are among the world leaders in their field, and Lipkin is more than the greeting with almost all the most important people in the U.S. healthcare system. Having such a person involved fully in ME research is one of the most important event in the field throughout its history .

Read the blog post about what Lipkin says about their preliminary findings in ME / CFS field.

But not Lipkin is immune to the chronic cash shortage in ME research. A private foundation spat into NOK 60 million over three years, but also the money bag approaching being empty . Research costs . In a blog interview Lipkin says that when he applied for funding to continue ME research , he was devastated by the bad review process was on the field , and the professionals who assessed the applications clearly was not competent to do so. To put it like that, Ian Lipkin applied research many times before in connection with other projects for other diseases , and it is hardly normal that he experiences the assessment process in the way he did at the ME field.

Well, we keep plugging away, and it's good to see the $, and especially the number of donors, keep rising...albeit slowly. It's frustrating to me to see it going so slowly, but we've got to keep plugging away and hope we reach a tipping point. I want to thank the team for keeping it visible, and working as hard as you obviously have. I think the "blogs" were a great idea. Thank you all, and know that what you're doing is appreciated.
