For our new followers: we thought you might like the Who, What, Why, When of our campaign in one compact post!

Who: A patient-led crowdfunding project to support Dr. Ian Lipkin.
“The World’s Most Celebrated Virus hunter”, “A Man From Whom Viruses Can’t Hide".
At the Center for Infection and Immunity, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, New York.

What: We are aiming to crowdfund $1.27m for Dr Lipkin to study the gut microbiome of ME/CFS patients.

Why: Dr Lipkin has found evidence for immune dysregulation in ME/CFS patients and believes that an infectious agent is causing the dysregulation. He believes the answer may lie in the gut microbiome, and is eager to study it. Dr Lipkin's research funding application was rejected by the NIH, so we have started this patient-led crowdfunding project to support Dr Lipkin's research. The ME/CFS patient community has a chance to have a world-renowned scientist dedicate his team to our illness. Let's grab that chance!

When: We have a target date of 31st Dec 2014

How: Please visit out website for details of how to donate:

http://www.microbediscovery.org/

Or donate directly here:

More about the man himself? Of late, Dr. Lipkin has been investigating the SARS-like MERS Coronavirus identified in 2012 which causes acute respiratory illness, shortness of breath and in severe cases kidney failure. The virus is related to the SARS virus and the common cold; most of the reported infections have come from countries in the Middle East. Click on this story for a taste of the kinds of viruses that Dr. Lipkin is accustomed to investigating.

I noticed that there is a disclaimer about a delay regarding the total. How long is the delay realistically for donations sent via the web site? I ask because my family donated an amount on my behalf that should have moved the total more than it did this past update?

Hi acer, many thanks to you and your family for making a donation.
Could you please pass on our thanks to your family?

Our understanding is that donations usually take a day to clear.
And then there might also be another slight delay before the team receive the latest update, and post it online.

Bob is going to post the latest update in the next post.

And what better way to celebrate International ME Awareness Day than by making a contribution to this fabulous piece of research? :)

Just donated and noticed something helpful - if you double-click in any of the fields (such as your name, address, etc.) you may find that your computer provides the answer you put in last time (except for your credit card details, understandably).

Let's throw some money at this thing, folks! :balloons::balloons::balloons:

We've had quite a lot going on over the past few days, and we haven't been able to keep this thread up to date, because we've been so busy (and we could do with some extra volunteers... hint.)

We hope to update the thread soon, but in the mean time, if anyone would like to catch up with recent events, please visit our Facebook page, and/or our Twitter stream.
