Does anyone have any advice/experience with avoiding benzoates?

Hi,

I've recently conducted the Acumen Translator protein studies test, which has identified Benzoate and nickel complex as the 2 chemicals causing 26% blocking of active sites (leading to low whole-cell ATP and poor ADP to ATP re-conversion). Does anyone have any experience avoiding benzoates?

Thanks!

Hi @jo831,

Welcome to PR.

My daughter avoids benzoates (well "avoid" is probably too weak a term). We check all food labels for E210 to
E219 and are learning about places where benzoates are not listed (like in children's medication). Benzoates exist naturally in some foods, but I think the levels must be substantially lower than when added as preservative (besides prunes aren't high on her list of desert island foods).

I'm really interested in the test you had - are you able to tell me more? I googled but found one link to Dr Myhill's site which didn't seem to work.

I think my d's reaction to benzoate is related to histamine, because after a benzoate reaction she is decreasingly sensitive to histamine for, literally, months. It's been hard for us to get this medically recognised.

I'd love to know more about what you know. I'm just starting out.

Thanks @GreyOwl for sharing.
I have been feeling extremely fatigued for the past couple of months and finally found a doctor (I'm based in Hong Kong) who did the Acumen mitochondrial translocator protein study on me. I'm not really sure how to read the results but I was told to avoid Benzoates (yes, E210 -E219, berries etc) and to remove all jewellery to avoid further nickel contact. I'm not sure if I'm actually allergic to benzoate and nickel, or perhaps this is just a sensitivity that has accumulated over the years, but i also get a lot of allergies in addition to crippling fatigue (itchy skin all of a sudden, sinus allergies and sometimes I can't differentiate if it's a cold or allergy).
In another previous blood test, I tested high on my Eosinophil count, which is supposed to indicate allergic reactions. So far my doctor has prescribed Magnesium, Zinc, GSH, CoQ and L-Carnitine to help detox.
I'm only about 3 weeks into this treatment & diet but I haven't felt much of a difference except the brain fog has cleared slightly.
I don't know what your daughter is going through but I hope she feels better. I find it extremely tough to explain to people the intensity of my fatigue and how annoying it is to cope with these allergies.. hope this helps

Thanks for the info on the test @jo831. Re your itchy skin and sinus problems, I recommend searching PR for threads on mast cell issues, specifically MCAS. There have been a few threads recently that have been really helpful on this.

My daughter has been really good lately. Thanks for your good wishes.

Hi @jo831, how are you going? Has your health improved since last June?

Hi GreyOwl,

Hope your daughter is well.
As for me, I was better after a 3-month detox program last year but the fatigue has come back again. After about 6 months into work, I started to get the same feelings of exhaustion. I did another Acumen test and this time there is a lower percentage of blocking of active sites, but only nickel was the issue (unlike the time before, which was nickel and benzoates). It's frustrating because my doctor says this is something that I'll have to manage life long.
This time round, I've cut dairy and egg from my diet as, according to a holistic wellness center, indigestion seems to be contributing to my fatigue and my poor sleep quality. I've been desperate - I'm still not sleeping well and have finally done a sleep study, which has identified that I'm suffering from mild grade obstructive sleep apnea. Unfortunately, the sleep specialist says this isn't the reason why I dream excessively and suffer from fatigue.
However, i am on the mend but it fluctuates a lot. Some days I can miraculously last most of the day without a nap, and other days I get exhausted only a few hours into the day.

Thanks for asking how I'm doing x
