I think C4a is probably like the rest of the immune system, in that it is likely to become exhausted - I think this would explain the high C4a in acute Lyme and the low C4a in the chronic cases. Alternatively, perhaps having congenitally low C4a predisposes you to develop chronic Lyme.

Oops, I just realised that the Stricker study was done in Chronic Lyme patients, not those with acute Lyme. Perhaps this has more to do with the kind of Lyme then, since they found that 'neurological' Lyme patients had C4a levels that were similar to controls.

I have quite low c3a and normal c4a but a really bad SPECT and tested positive for bartonella encephalopathy. Im not sure what this indicates as i havent found anyone else with this ratio.
