ME/CFS: A disease at war with itself
We can all agree that ME/CFS is a nasty disease, particularly in its severe form, but there are abundant nasty diseases in the world. What is unique and particularly confounding about our disease is that so much controversy surrounds it, and not only surrounds it, but invades it too.

Dr Andy Wright is to appear before the General Medical Council's Fitness to Practise panel in a few weeks time. See about half way down this page:

    http://www.gmc-uk.org/news/4129.asp

He's been treating ME patients for many years and been a considerable source of support to many of us.

    Very concerning.

'Fatigue disorder' and 'absence of evidence' sort of leaps out at you. Sounds familiar.
    :(

You would wonder how one would gather evidence when Wessy and the boys have the biomedical search for evidence in a neck lock.

Unfortunately this link didn't work Jenny, but I'll try another way. They failed with Dr Myhill - hope the same here. When one sees the obvious cases listed - drug abuse, alcohol abuse etc. by the GMC I find this outrageous for a Doc trying only to help his patients.

Medicine is actually a monopoly. Anyone that steps outside of this monopoly basically gets crushed, whether you are helping patients or not. Just look at the Dr Myhill witch hunt.

The link did work for me. This is so sad. Dr Wright knew that it would be sometime in October. He told one patient that he didn't want a fuss made over this. If anyone has any current news or knows where we can write letters of support to (usually to a lawyer acting for him or similar)

    ==========

    Dr Andrew John WRIGHT
    GMC Reference Number: 2825184
    Area of practice: Lancashire

Planned dates: 17 October to 25 November 2011
    St James's Building, 79 Oxford Street, Manchester, M1 6FQ

The Fitness to Practise Panel will meet at St James's Building, 79 Oxford Street, Manchester, M1 6FQ to consider a new case of impairment by reason of misconduct.

The Panel will inquire into the allegation that between 2003 and 2006, Dr Wright, a General Practitioner, ran a private practice specialising in the management of fatigue disorders. It is alleged that Dr Wright instructed the Bowen Research and Training Institute, Florida, to test samples of six patients' blood despite the Institute not being licensed for clinical laboratory testing. It is also alleged that in respect of a number of patients Dr Wright made diagnoses which were based upon inadequate evidence and subsequently initiated treatment.

The above reflects the allegation as it stands at the start of the hearing. The allegation may be amended as the hearing proceeds and when findings of fact are made by the Panel. If you require up to date information regarding the allegation throughout the course of the hearing, please contact the GMC's Press Office.

In accordance with Rule 41(2) of the General Medical Council (Fitness to Practise) Rules 2004, the Panel may decide to exclude the public from the proceedings or any part of the proceedings, where they consider that the circumstances of the case outweigh the public interest in holding the hearing in public.

That's interesting ukxmrv - the wording this time - the Panel to ascertain facts - and bring themselves up to date with all the very latest research findings and treatments - or is that hoping too much. I hope we can help/support in some way.

My my, doesn't the British physicians' bunch of old fogies and cronies in charge, er, the BMA and GMC, do so well at saving us from the biggest mass muederers on the planet, NOT!!
And yet still manages to bully anyone who does't kow-tow to them, eh?

I wonder why, oh why, they are that frikkin' incompetant at saving patients lives
but oh so good at saving doctor's careers who do kowtow to them, even when they've been whacking more folk than Hannibal bloody Lector with PMT and a machinegun, eh? :p

BMA = a guild, a closed shop of the worst sort.
corrupt, out dated pile of poo, who's only goals like any such old, corrupt body is keeping the organization itself rolling in graavy
see Catholic Church hiding child abusers, same thing, reputation, power, money are more important than saving lives or souls.
So, to hell with 'em all.

It'll be interesting to find out whether the complaints originated from a patient or another doctor. After the Myhill debacle, I strongly suspect the latter.

The main complaint is actually pretty weird. Provided the test results are treated with caution, it's hard to see how sending blood to an unlicensed laboratory actually harms patients.

And I often wondered why none of the viruses now commonly picked up in ME patients were not diagnosed in my general NHS blood test. Sounds as though more specialist targeted tests are needed. Primary and at least - HHV6,EBV,Coxsackie, CMV, Lyme (titres), natural killer cell etc.

I agree orion - it does sound like the "latter" again. If memory serves weren't the complaining Docs in Lancashire in Dr Myhill's case too.

Its a shame Dr Wright didnt want a fuss making of this, it might be helpful to future Dr's to have large votes of confidence in the way of petitions to take to these hearings, if only to prove that the Dr in question is seen by the patients as a credit to his profession.
However, such hearing will only focus on the actual 'misconduct' by the Dr, and i suppose it wont take into consideration the possible benefit to the patients.
I mean, god forbid that this illness is recognised as a debilitating one that requires its sufferers to cease work and claim govenment benefits, that might actually
mean the UK have less money to spend on bombing innocent people across the globe.
Ive always thought that the quality of any society is measured best on how it looks after its weakest members, the UK's top brass should be ashamed of themselves.
Im half way through reading oslers web, and today as i turn 31, im sure that if i reach the age of 70, this country (UK) wont have changed its stance on ME one bit

actually, they begrudge spending the money on the bombs, too, meh!
notice how they've slashed the UK's military AGAIN, yet expect them to do more, and now are saying we should use our reserves more AND private security firms?

IMHO, no MP should be allowed ot vote on ANY military issue without having family in the military or having served them damn selves
To me, they are traitors undermining our genuine national security for the sake of corporate crony interests, using our infantry as bloody human sandbags :/
Last time that happened we nearly got wiped out by a certain Austrian's madness, and history has a damn ugly way of "sort of" repeating itself.

and for the record, I love the idea of European integration and harmony, stroll on EU! I don't expect problems from Germany because it's scumbags got largley wiped out and let them rebuild a truly modern, efficient nation who didn't then sell out it's manufacturing capacity to further the interests of the filthy rich sociopaths as happened int he UK...."service economy" my hairy Scottish arse! Pushing that lunacy in the UK is what has ruined us and heads should roll for it. Iraq was for oil corporation's benefit hard fact, whether some liek it or not, Afghanistan was for a gas pipilne and huge mineral reserves particlarly of lithium

Don't get your hopes up. By facts they mean the facts of what the doctor did. if they learn new bad facts they are reserving the right to add more charges, that's all. i bet they are not interested in learning the facts about the disease.

This is very sad and disturbing news.

It's a long time since I consulted with him but his goodness and sincerity shone through.

Anyone got contact details for letters of support? (echoing ukxmrv)

For the first time, I disagree with SilverB

UK plc does not begrudge spending on bombs the so called cuts in the military budgets are a ticket to your EU state ask the French Navy - we are also tied into the US military and are at their disposal why oh why we believe it acceptable to drop bombs on civilians is beyond me and there is no justification for said war crimes that we continue to commit. Isnt there some convention that states a war be fought with equal and opposite force? Tell that to Iraq/Afgan people. Not too sure how I would feel at the mercy of some youngster brought up on video games blasting away with the latest toy given to them by dubious weapons manufacturers. Hasnt the recent Liam Fox with his US and Israel groups links exposed the evil of those that direct the military?

Money, resources and power nothing more is at the root of those nations that use sovereign military force. MPs care not about fodder they do not care about their own citizens never mind the citizens of other nations. They speak the names of those that are sacrificed (curious use of the word) on the TV news for 15 seconds then its off to the sports news.

The military are nothing but a tool of tyranny, they constantly seek out the most brutal way to end someones life - shock and awe command presence inhuman the propaganda machine rolls on and the people of the UK, US, EU, etc buy into it everytime just keep reading your paper and watching your TV or do you just believe authority is telling lies about ME? The whole setup is a lie from beginning to end everything from your money, the Law, and whatever religion was pounded into your head when you were a child is not worth anything. Its all about control.

History repeating itself what do you think the whole EU debacle is about? The ECB issuing bonds for the bailing out of various EU banks is the next step in the creation of Hitlers desire Europe run by the most powerful and richest nation within its unified border. The Nazis did not disappear, they are still there, not necessarily in Germany If you believe that there are no filthy rich sociopaths in Germany then that is wholly incorrect if you believe the filthy rich sociopaths of the UK, the US, Switzerland, Russia, China, etc are any different to those in Germany you are just plain wrong.

The banking system, false capitalism, greed, successive government and the City of London (the Crown) are the cause of our ruin, not the service industry the same as the rest of the world.

Cant do anything about your rear end have you tried clippers?

AndrewB - good on you for reading the book - 'web' is an understatement!

Back to the subject of the post - maybe it will take a number of GP's to go in front of the GMC before they will take any notice - parliament, the House of Lords, the MRC, NHS, NICE, CDC, and any other set of letters you may know all seem to be deaf, blind and incapable of independent thought and logic - so I'm not holding my breath - any so called 'Doctor' worth his/her salt would walk away from the profession once they encountered a patient with severe ME - what are they there for if not to administer care? If they are prevented from doing so they may as well join the military and go and kill someone abroad - that seems to be acceptable.

Max, you are so right! We desperately need the clinicians and scientists to stand up and let the public and politicians know what the truth is and how these charlatans are intentionally abusing disabled people! Everyone please ask the scientists and clinicians to speak out!!

This is another shameful witch hunt - Dr Myhill had the guts and courage to face these people more than once, and she won, but you need a very robust constitution to keep fending these ridiculous accusations off. I'm really disappointed another good ME doc has been driven out.

I'm really sorry to hear this. I have consulted Dr Wright and found him to be good, knowledgeable and most importantly, willing to help. He has a lot of experience and knowledge in treating "fatigue". He has also done research into infections, which I think is what he specialises in. I knew he had stopped his fatigue clinic, and wondered if it was for this reason, and am sorry to find out that it is.
