I live in Italy and do not yet have a diagnosis. Yesterday I had my first appointment with a CFS specialist in Aviano and I'm very happy with the visit. This is the first time I've met a doctor that seemed to know what he was doing. He was also very polite and never made me feel insecure. He was very interested in past infections and took a detailed history. The visit took over an hour and he gave me a long list of lab tests that still need to be performed to exclude known conditions. Public health care will cover most of the expenses. He speculated that my symptoms are probably either due to the empty sella syndrome (which previous doctors discovered but never acted upon) or lyme disease (apparently my symptoms match it very well). Before the visit, there was a psychologist who tried to be relevant, but it was optional and she did not insist further when I declined.
This whole experience was so different from my previous experiences that I felt the need to write about it here and leave a little note to other patients from Italy who may be considering visiting this clinic. Not all is lost yet.
