My whole family has the swine flu and it has affected my husband and I the most negatively. We both have FMS and CFS and can't seem to shake it. We have both had the flu off and on for about a month now. For my son and his roommate, it has been more than a month. I know people with ME/CFS understandably shy away from flu shots because of contaminants and reactions of the immune system. However, for the next couple of years, it is VERY IMPORTANT you get one.

Please click on the following link and read the article. We happen to live in Wyoming, one of the states affected the most this year where 95% of the flu is H1N1. http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/health/2013/12/30/flu-outbreak-spreads-across-us-affects-young-adults/

I understand that everything is risk vs benefits. But do people who are immunocompromised really feel safe about taking this vaccine?

From the sources I have seen, the swine flu scare is overblown. It is no more dangerous than regular flu. As I would never take a shot for regular flu, I wouldn't take one for swine flu either.

My health started seriously declining after I got a bunch of shots before going to south east asia.

Mya Symons,

Sorry to hear you and yours are poorly . I hope you have a speedier return to 'health'.

Its not important for me to get vaccinated at all. I nearly died after a vaccination as a baby and a vacination played a role i think in my ill health.

I dont trust the science behind vaccination at all.

Have you and yout family had labs confirm its swine flu? Sometimes they just guess.

Thankyou though :) for your concern

I read something the other day.. (it may of been an actual research study) in which they found that those who had taken the flu shot regularly for years (it was during a 10 year period).. the results of that were that their immune systems now werent working as well (I think the article/study put it down to the mercury in this vaccinaton). It certainly confirmed to me Im doing the right thing by avoiding vaccinations. I reallly wish I could remember where I'd seen it so I could of posted the link.
......

then I have the added issue of my body not responding right to vaccines (the only one Ive been tested for after it, I had so many times over and over as "it didnt take".. to my knowledge even after all the extra times of having it, it still didnt). Those getting vaccinations, take care not to falsely assume they have worked for you as many of us do have issues with bodies not producing antibodies properly to things.

I prefer the tactic of just avoiding other people as much as possible when there are things going around.:p

And the most important thing - not to touch my face when I'm out.

You pick up infections on your hands when touching things, and transfer them to yourself when you touch your face.

It's actually not easy not to touch your own face.
I always wash my hands thouroughly when I get in too.

In other words, do not pick your nose after touching things while out

Daughter and I had H1N1 in 2009. We were sick for months and both developed walking pneumonia. Our ME/CFS got MUCH worse. It was years before she was back to her baseline, and I've never gotten all the way back.

We wanted the vaccine back then but couldn't get it because we were "not in an at-risk population." We get killed-virus flu vaccines every year now. Reactions we've had were very mild and much better than getting the seasonal flu and vastly better than getting the more severe flu like H1N1. This year we got the preservative-free killed-virus flu vaccine and had no reactions at all.

For the record, daughter and I both have multiple documented immune abnormalities and still have no trouble with the killed virus flu vaccine.

That isn't to say everyone will have no trouble with the killed-virus flu vaccine. It's still an idiosyncratic thing. People who have had bad reactions in the past could have bad reactions again. It's important to know, however, whether the vaccine you reacted badly to was a live-virus or a killed-virus vaccine. Most PWME will react badly to live-virus vaccines (which is why most of our specialists advise against them), but do okay with killed virus vaccines. Most of our specialists still recommend killed-virus vaccines unless you've had a bad reaction to that particular vaccine in the past.

In the US, the flu vaccine comes in both a live- and killed-virus form, and the killed-virus form (the shot) also comes in a with preservative and a preservative-free form. The last I heard, the Pandemix (the one associated with narcolepsy) is not used in the US.

My family is not 100% pro-vaccine. We believe you have to use judgement in making each decision. Daughter crashed very badly (going out of remission for years) after getting a bunch of pre-college vaccinations. What we didn't know then was that the chicken pox booster is a live-virus herpesvirus vaccine. That's a seriously bad vaccine for PWME, especially those whose immune systems can't control herpesviruses. That doesn't mean ALL vaccines are bad for daughter, even though a vaccine crashed her badly. It does mean that we now know not to get live-virus vaccines, but that killed-virus vaccines are much safer for us.

There is no way that l will risk my health with a flu shot when a clove of garlic, eaten with I bit of bread to get it down, knocks any bug on the head very quickly if l act soon enough, and if l don't l have a frequency generator to knock anything out including salmonella in a day.

Yup, and I'll bet at least some of them were live-virus vaccines. A number of vaccines needed for travel to areas of endemic illnesses not common in the Western world are live virus vaccines.

From Wikipedia:
Examples of "live" (example attenuated) vaccines include:

Good luck with that if you get H1N1. I tried every OTC and natural method available and was still very sick. Not everything is as easy for a weak immune system as a cold.

I wish they would have given the exact percentage of the increased risk of narcolepsy then a person could weigh it against the chance of getting very ill or dying of swine flu. Also, I wonder if getting the swine flu itself increases the risk.
The people who naturally got the same strain of H1N1 that was in the Pandemrix also had increased risk of narcolepsy. It was the strain of H1N1 that was the narcolepsy culprit, not the vaccine itself.

I did get it a while back when it was doing its rounds. It lasted a day. The trick is in the timing. It must be done immediately the first symptom is there. Rifing is more forgiving. My immune system is very low.

If it lasted one day, it wasn't H1N1. That's not how the flu works.

That's great if you had something relatively short-term and your treatment reduced the symptoms and secondary effects. It's always good to have such treatments at hand.

It was actually. I knew it was not ordinary flu because of the gastric symptoms too and it was doing its rounds and l had contact with it a few days earlier. The garlic did not reduce the symptoms, it cured it within 24 hours. It was gone but l felt extra tired for a few days during recovery. But believe what you will. I will continue knocking out infections as always.

I too try to avoid any flu shots or vaccines. I usually end up with a golf ball to tennis ball sized lump where the shot was, a fever, and flu symptoms from the shots. But, this time this flu was so bad I am wishing I had went through the lumps and symptoms of the flu shot. I have not been tested yet, but am going to the doctor in a couple days to see if an antibiotic will help. The woman I work with who was in the hospital with swine flu works the afternoon shift after my morning shift. She sits in my chair and uses my work area. Plus, I live in college town and work at the college. There have been stories in the paper about how Swine Flu is working it's way through the dorms. Thus, I am pretty sure I picked it up from my co-worker and gave it to my whole family.

I can understand though, why you would not want to take a chance with any shots. If I had almost died from a vaccine, I would rather take my chances on getting the swine flu.
