The CFIDS Association of America announces that longtime president and CEO, K. Kimberly McCleary, will be leaving her role as the organization’s CEO early this summer. Ms. McCleary joined the CFIDS Association as the organization’s first chief staff executive more than 22 years ago; her family will be relocating in June at which time she will become an active member of the Association’s Scientific Advisory Board.

I hope CAA can move forward and mend the divisiveness in the ME/CFS community associated with her tenure.
The CAA has a big opportunity here, I hope it is recognized and acted upon. I hope her continued involvement does not hinder that chance. I hope those who have had great discord with CAA will also see this opportunity and be willing to do their part in fence mending. It can't be all from one side. It is not just 2 sides either ! There are many facets.
I have not been able to support the CAA for a very long time. I am willing to give it another look with this turn of events. Look, I know an organization is more than one person. But , well , a tone and direction was set and locked in. Perhaps this can be a key to that lock.
I imagine there will always be factions that will not get along no matter who is in charge of any organization. That seems to be human nature. I just hope the strong vitriol can end.
We don't have the energy to waste on being so divided.
I wish her well.

That's the first I've heard or thought about the CAA since their Research Without Walls program was launched. I'd almost forgot about them. Wonder who will take her place and will they be a real CEO?

Whats the going rate for a charity CEO in the good olde US of A these days? I have nothing against Kim - far from it - but the kind of heavy salaries (for what is my perception of little actual progress) that has attached itself to CEO's of charities, has crept across the pond. And I do not like it or agree with it. However, show me that performance-related pay is to be introduced; and I might change my mind. It just rubs me up the wrong way to think that all the funds raised by patients from patient pockets is in part placed in the pockets of CEO's and the like. AFME are another charity in the UK for whom this particular bugbear is most relevant. I am not of the opine that such weighty salaries are necessary to attract the 'right' people for the role. Far from it. And I am not a socialist either. There should be pay, don't get me wrong, but it should be in some way [more] proportionate and commensurate (or something)...

Andrew,

I haven't been following these things lately. I remember Jenny saying here that Fukuda + PEM was used as the standard for everyone. this is a lot better than just Fukuda, but ridiculous nonetheless when it wouldn't cost any more to use Fukuda + CCC. Can you clarify this issue for me?

No surprise that I am glad to see her go, though CAA has been moving a bit in the right direction in the last couple of years. However, the fact that the board self-perpetuates and a new board member is a former longtime CDC employee, probably means we won't get the big change from McCleary that's needed.

Let's write to the board to remind them that a change is needed. If you write, put it to the attention of the board of directors. Cfids@cfids.org

I agree absolutely. I disagree with the mantra "You have to pay a lot to get the best people." I consider that paying a lot is the way to get the greediest people - not the sort you want at the head of a charity (or anywhere else IMO).

CAA = a camp surrounded by barbed wire, with a keep-out sign planted in front. (But i'm sure Kim will be highly missed)

I had to do a bit of reading to find out who the CAA was - in the UK it's the Civil Aviation Authority!

Okay, I looked back at what I said and realized I was not remembering this correctly. So I deleted my post. I apologize for any misunderstanding I created.

I met Ms Mcleary at a presentation put on by the CAA. Struck me as a mostly interested in promoting KM, with some MBA flavored sound effects directed towards the audience.
