Dr John Chia - info needed

Hi everyone,

I’m going to be in Los Angeles in October, and I’d really like to try and get an appointment with Dr Chia while I’m there. I’m trying to find out if he sees patients from overseas (I’m in England), but I can’t find a website or email for him or the medical centre in general, which I find a bit odd. I have a phone number, but the main issue isn’t the cost of calling the US (although I can image it’ll be pretty expensive), but that I’m usually unable to use the phone (I get anxiety as well as calls being exhausting after about two seconds), and in general because of what I want to ask and find out beforehand, having it emailed would be easier so I don’t forget anything. Does anyone know where I can find an address, or does anyone here see him and could perhaps ask if he’d give permission for his or his secretary’s email address to be passed onto me?

Thanks in advance for your help! :)

People have hangups about calling abroad but I don't think it is as expensive as it was decades ago. For example, the BT charge is 50p per minute https://www.productsandservices.bt.com/landline/calling-costs/ . I don't imagine a call to a medical centre would be that long.
If one can afford to see him, one could probably afford such a call. A cheaper option would be Skype which I have used before to ring the US.

I tried to contact him about something a few times by email without success. I eventually wrote a letter which his son replied to. This was around a decade ago.

I called from Canada and he would have seen me. He doesn’t do skype though, he sees patients in person.

His practice is named ID Med, as far as I know they have no website or public email for contact. The phone is your best bet. Perhaps you can write down your questions and someone can call on your behalf? The wait times to see him as a new patient can exceed 6 months, so you may be cutting it close for October. Also he normally has you have blood drawn for enterovirus serology weeks before so the results are ready by your appointment, but perhaps he’d make exceptions for people coming from out of the country.

Myself and several others here are patients of his, we can try to answer any questions assuming it’s not for direct medical advice.

As I said, it’s not really about the cost, but my anxiety, and after about 30 seconds my cognitive dysfunction kicks in and I can’t concentrate and start to drop off, which obviously isn’t good for an important phone call.

One can’t afford to see him at the moment. One is fundraising.

Thank you! :) I did find it a bit strange that there was no website or email. Maybe it’s just not as normal to do that over there than it is here. I’ll try and find someone to call for me. My husband would do it, but he works in healthcare himself and is usually either working a long shift or sleeping, and then Dr Chia’s surgery is closed at the weekends. Things are just so much more simple in that instance with email or an online contact form. But never mind, I’ll try and work something out!

How have you got on with him? Have their been any changes in your health?

Have you factored in that California is something like 8 hours behind the UK so that your husband can ring outside 9-5 pm during the week?

I have indeed. But he works in healthcare, with very long shifts, longer than a 9-5, so he usually comes home and falls straight asleep as he can barely keep his eyes open, but like I said, we’ll figure something out :) I think a lot of things in general could stand to be more accessible, especially so we can do these things ourselves, but hey-ho.

Yes, I know. It just felt like you were making a dig at me in your original comment, so I did it on purpose.

Anyway, I only came here to find help. We all struggle on different levels, and I think that’s forgotten, sometimes. What’s easy to do for one person could be really difficult for someone else.

Dr Chia's office address and email given here. His fax number is (310) 784-5880.

If your anxiety is generalized anxiety disorder, this might be of interest to you:
Completely eliminated my severe anxiety symptoms with three supplements!

If your anxiety is panic disorder or social anxiety, then the above anti-anxiety treatment I don't think will work.

Just fine. He is an intelligent doctor and has done his best to help me. His treatment has not cured me but has improved quality of life. I also believe I probably would have slid into severe ME without his treatment.
