Do you get a flu vaccine?

Hi there,

Do any of you get an annual flu vaccine? Have your doctors (particularly CFS specialists) given you any guidance for or against getting the vaccine?

I'm trying to weigh the costs and benefits of the vaccine, but it's pretty hard when there's not much scientific recommendations out there for people with CFS.

Thanks!

I never did. The last time I got any vaccinations was in 1993, just before a long travel in rural Africa. Accidentally got 10 times the dose for polio. The last time such 'mistakes' could happen :bang-head:

However, then during the 1 1/2 years in Africa I got 4 times the at times deathly plasmodium falsiparum malaria. Remember being surprised that with immediate treatment it wasn't much worse than the flu, as I remembered it. Now I don't even remember the last time I've got the flu, even if I catch a cold it's gone in a day or two.

I got it this year for the first time. We're supposedly due a bad bout of flu this season so I decided to risk it. Apart from a slightly sore arm and a very mild fever in the evening on the day of the injection, no other bad signs. That is, there was no apparent worsening of my usual crappy symptoms.

I got it. I find that even a touch of winter flu or cold or whatever knocks me out, maybe for many weeks. I can’t even remember exactly when I got the shot, as I had zero reaction.

Flu vax on average matches the flu by the time it arrives only in about half or 2/3 of flu seasons. But it seems to have some value even when the flu has mutated by the time it reaches you, whenever I’ve got the shot I’ve had only something mild during that winter.

Seems like a good trade. Might work differently for you.

I got it this year for the first time and had no problems with it, but it is basically a game of Russian Roulette as there is no way of knowing in advance what your reaction will be, or whether you will catch the flu (it only protects against certain influenza strains and not against a lot of other strains or other viruses that result in flu-like illnesses).

I only got it this year in case we had a bad flu season and I have a nephew who just started school so might pick it up there and pass it on to me. I don't know yet whether I will get the vaccine in future years. A pity it is not like a lot of other vaccines where you just have to get one to three shots and you are vaccinated for life :(

If you didn’t have a reaction this time, it’s reasonable to think you would not have a reaction next time. It’s all the same ingredients except for a different strain flu, and the bugs are out and about over the winter anyway. The difference is that the vaccine Contains only a tiny tiny amount of non-infectious fragments of those bugs, whereas out in the wild you get hit with the real thing.

OTOH, It is said that most people don’t catch the flu that’s going around every year, the flu is the one that knocks you out flat completely even if you’re healthy. Usually one gets some variety of cold virus which is a different species of creature, At least that’s how I understand it, I am not a biologist.

What I do know is that whenever I get the flu shot, which now is always, I’ve only had a mild case of whatever instead of weeks of misery. It’s not supposed to have any effect on the common cold, but perhaps not fighting off a low-grade case of the flu (because the vax acts as an early warning system) lets your system deal with colds better. Of course it could also be a random chance +/or not going to the office every day and so forth, but since I live in a filthy big city and across the street from the high school I figure that one way or another I’m going to be exposed to A bit of every seasonal bug.
It’s difficult to draw conclusions from doing experiments on yourself, And when you finally get one with a little confidence it might not apply to other people who have what appear to be the same illness.

I would hope so, though reading comments from people with ME they can have different reactions in different years. I would be more inclined to get it again though now that I have had one with no bad reaction, as odds are I think that I won't have a bad reaction again. I wouldn't get it if I was currently suffering from an infection, as the reaction might be worse then.

Yeah most of the flu-like viruses people get are not influenza, apparently.

Yeah I am wondering about that. It will be interesting to see how I get on this year. I had 3 colds in the last year, which knocked me out for a few weeks each.

I got a flu and pneumonia shot in 1999 because I had been doing better for the previous couple of years with my ME/CFS (I was at probably about 75%). As I drove away from the doctor's office I started shaking uncontrollably and headed back to the office where they made me lay down for awhile. Went home and began having major panic attacks and many other neurological symptoms. I was taken by ambulance twice to the ER. After seeing a cardiologist the only diagnosis I received was that I had panic disorder and that my autonomic nervous system was a mess for some unknown reason. The ER docs said I should avoid vaccinations. I think the vaccines triggered a response in my immune system that permanently affected my nervous system. I've been on beta blockers and xanax ever since.

My ME/CFS worsened again after that.

So no. I don't take vaccines anymore.
