Chronic Fatigue Syndrome And Fear Of Exercise
Most people suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome often claim that exercising makes their symptoms worse. Many of them are worried about conducting any kind of exercise because it could aggravate the symptoms, which is understandable. In fact, there’s actual research that shows how chronic fatigue gets worse when patients try to do only as much as they need to do — a symptom known as post-exertional malaise [4].
What would be a minor exertion for most people brings severe tiredness and pain to those suffering from CFS because exercise lowers the pain threshold. People with chronic fatigue syndrome find it harder to recover their muscles after a workout and often show lower scores on cognitive tests after physical activity, compared to control groups.[5] The patients often reduce their activity levels in response to fatigue, a feature shown to be a protective mechanism in humans as well as animals [6]. They learn to adapt to the fatigue rather than persistently “picking the wound”.
In a study published in The Lancet in 2011, researchers used a method called mediation analysis to identify how abstract factors like beliefs affect fatigue. The study found that patients who were able to overcome their fears about fitness showed the greatest improvements. [7]

Could Exercise be the Cure for Chronic Fatigue?
Chronic fatigue syndrome is hard to treat because it’s still unknown what actually causes the disorder. The tiredness won’t simply go away, even with rest. A Recent study published in The Lancet found that exercise may help to those suffering from chronic fatigue to feel better afterward.
The key is to gradually increase the amount of physical activity. Those who participated in the study for 12 weeks afterward felt a lot better. Scientist claim that getting used to exercise by using only small amounts of effort and increasing it gradually can do a lot for those affected by the syndrome. The participants were doing exercises at home under phone or Skype surveillance of their physical therapist, something called guided graded self-help treatment.
It’s very important to learn how to exercise without causing more damage. It’s possible by gradually getting used to the exercising, and this can be done by gradually increasing the time of the workout, from the only couple of minutes of walking at the very beginning.
