I think ammonia is an issue for me and causes brain fog.
I had mine tested and it was high and almost out of range
but not sure.

I got back my levels from HDRI

Ammonia result = 37 range 8-40 umol/L

Hi @vortex I had High ammonia levels too on an Organic acids test from Genova, also any time I was particularly exhausted or slightly stressed, i could smell it in my urine too, it's to do with Poor Phase 1 liver detox apparently. My nutritionist prescribed Arginine and Ornithine and it improved along with a reduction in symptoms. Also after massage, acupuncture, yoga, I smell it in my urine too as the body manages to detox, so i just drink loads of water and let it pass. I know you can also use a supplement called Butyrate

I also have high ammonia levels.
Charcoal works good but be aware that it also grab minerals and vitamins.

Yucca works also good, I use this one.

Neem seems to lower ammonia as well; I use this one.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone.

My test was a blood test and although I am on the high side, I am still within
normal range, but wondering if I should consider it high?

I guess I am wondering if anyone else had a blood test so I could
get a better feel on how to interpret this test.

I am taking ornithine and it is making a noticeable difference.
I also have had a good response to charcoal in the past and
I always wondered why toxin it was pulling out that was making
me feel better.

I have some yucca and I am going to start taking that too.
Hopefully that will be selective about pulling ammonia
out and not pull anything good out in the process like charcoal
can.

I have not tried butryate but will look into this.

@vortex My doctor told me that an Ammonia blood test is very hard to process an accurate result so it could be a false positive or negative. Do you notice a smell in your urine or from your sweat? I have only had a Urine test and it showed it to be pretty high - That was with genova diagnostics.

I recently underwent a self Liver fluush or cleanse, and it has definitely improved my sleep, energy marginally and cleared A LOT of Brain fog. But I am not sure that I would recommend it as it is pretty dramatic on the body and under the guidance of my acupuncturist, we are being very careful not to cause too much disturbance now. Fingers crossed it will improve Liver functionality in the long run.

Was your blood for the test drawn without a rubber cord tied around your arm and without you making a fist? It must be drawn without a band wrapped around the arm and no fist as doing it with those things will cause falsely elevated levels of ammonia.

"Collect blood from stasis-free vein of patient (e.g., no tourniquet). Patient should not clench fist during collection, as muscular exertion often increases venous ammonia levels. Patient should avoid smoking prior to phlebotomy since smoking increases plasma ammonia levels."

My local hospital laboratory wanted to collect my blood for ammonia testing the wrong way and didn't even know you are not supposed to use a tourniquet or have the person clench their fist when drawing the blood. They even tried to argue with me about it, but I called a few other labs (and my ME/CFS specialists lab tech)and they told me I was indeed correct and my local hospital is doing it incorrectly which of course results in incorrect results.
