DWP ‘Kill Yourself’ scandal

Had not seen this on PR. This is what is happening in the UK.

First they came for people with ME and now it is everyone else.

People claim DWP assessors asked them why they hadn’t killed themselves yet
https://www.thecanary.co/2017/03/01...t-tore-government-new-one-benefits-sanctions/

Psychologist says the DWP ‘Kill Yourself’ scandal is more proof disability assessments aren’t fit for purpose
https://www.thecanary.co/2017/03/07...disability-assessments-arent-fit-for-purpose/

This government blunder has gone under the radar but it could explain the DWP ‘Kill Yourself’ scandal
https://www.thecanary.co/2017/03/08...-could-explain-the-dwp-kill-yourself-scandal/

Britain’s top mental health experts just tore the government a new one on benefits sanctions
https://www.thecanary.co/2017/03/01...t-tore-government-new-one-benefits-sanctions/

The DWP must see that a bad job is worse for your mental health than unemployment
http://www.independent.co.uk/voices...mental-health-than-unemployment-a7600411.html

P.S. This all started with Simon Wessely and the PACE bunch and their biopsychosocial movement. And he has the cheek to talk about death threats.

Wasn't there a story some time ago with a guy who posted something derogatory on Facebook about ME CFS and it was later found out he worked for the DWP?

An acquaintance of mine experienced this first hand: he was suffering from significant depression and anxiety, as well as other health problems, and in his DWP interview they asked him: "have you ever thought of suicide?" When he replied "yes", the assessor immediately asked: "so why haven't you done it then?"

The answer would be to calmly lay out one's exit plan and dispassionately list the reasons why it can't be actioned (yet), including citing research on the impact of suicide on those left behind and the financial costs imposed on the health system by failed suicide attempts. Then follow up with a question on why the government doesn't introduce a euthanasia program to reduce the financial "burden" of disability and eliminate the costs associated with failed suicide attempts. Pretty sure there'd be nothing in the interviewers' guidelines to prepare them for an answer like that.

They'll get away with it, they have large support, there is currently a witch hunt, a sheer gang mentality, a "rising up" of "ordinary, hard working folks" who have been duped by both media and establishment that all our current ills as a society are the fault of immigrants and "dossers".

Immigrants means what it means, "dossers" means anyone on benefits. "I felt a little bit scared so I have to sponge off the government and hard working tax payers" is what these folks hear when they see "mental health".

I hear it a lot. People truly believe it. They think May is their saviour.

National Insurance just got raised. That is me. Because I am useless to any actual employer. NI is something I have to pay more of, for treatment that I DON'T GET and benefits THAT I'M NOT ENTITLED TO.

Grrr.

People do believe it. It's the Murdoch press. They are evil. And it's very scary how easy it is to incite hatred and how quickly it all becomes normal.

it is a shock to find out that a large proportion of people either don't think things through or simply don't share your values. What I find astonishing is how easily swayed some people are to blatent manipulation.

i blame Twitter .....it's such a fatuous reflection of the shallow thinking society we live in, but more importantly is making every issue debated in terms of limited character length. Fake news ....we've always had it but it's now become a monster.

I will stop there before I start ranting (it's unpleasant and can appear quite pompous I'm told ....quite a lot from my wife actually which I think is downright hurtful )

This is like some alternate reality or something. I think you all need to start wearing a microphone next time. :ninja:

But let's back up, if a social worker is with you, why isn't it a mandate that they MUST report it? Isn't it a crime to incite people to suicide? If so, why doesn't the social worker immediately call 999 and make out a police report? if you see a child being bashed in the street, nearly killed, don' t you call 999? Why doesn't the social worker lose their license for not reporting such a thing?

Take a look at what happened to ACORN a few years ago: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ACORN_2009_undercover_videos_controversy

I guess I'm just shocked they haven't been audio taped or videotaped yet. Wear a video or audio recorder, seriously. This is madness. You don't even have to buy one... tell a college kid and they'll set you up just for the thrill of it.

i think it's illegal to film or record DWP medicals unless you get permission in advance and use recording equipment that does two copies in real time so you can hand over one copy on the spot. in theory you can book for them to provide the equipment, but i gather they often won't.

Lies, lies and more lies from DWP.

DWP 'tells disability benefits assessors to discriminate against people with mental health conditions'

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...mination-pip-cuts-mobility-mind-a7629866.html

Wessely and co have been claiming they are bridging the gap between mental and physical illness and #banthebash. Theresa May had also been claiming the same about mental health parity.

https://www.theguardian.com/society...t-mental-healthcare-provision-reduce-suicides

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...dence-payments-pips-heidi-allen-a7601371.html

It is all a sham. Not that i am surprised about it though.

It is not illegal. You could record anything you want. They are just threatening and scaremongering.

This isn't so odd. As a psychiatric nurse it was part of an assessement to find out what stopped a suicidal patient from ending it all -- gives insights to how they coped with everything and then leads to what kind of intervention might be helpful.

That being said, it's beyond me why the rat bastards DWP assessors need to ask such a question. They aren't interested in how you cope, they are interested in showing you can cope without being on disability. The assesors are trained to ask certain questions. What they do with the info would be a lot different from what an RN would do with it. -- like help the patient.
