Any good books/websites about the why/how of ketogenic diets?

Can anyone recommend a good book on the why/how of ketogenic diets, that would be suitable for a person with zippo knowledge of biology?

On Amazon I can see a lot of keto weight-loss books written by people who don't appear to be scientists or doctors, and I'd be reluctant to trust the info.

Some people seem to be having good results on a keto diet but as usual, others are not!

Good thread discussing the topic here:

Hi Sasha,

My endo recommended New Atkins For a New You - https://www.amazon.co.uk/New-Atkins-You-Ultimate-Shedding/dp/0091935571

The practical parts are targeted more towards weight loss/prediabetes, but there is plenty of theory/explanation that is more general. There's no real difference in the diet if you're not interested in weight loss, just eat a bit more of the allowed foods if you feel you are losing weight.

The authors are obviously biased - most people tend to get very enthusiastic when something works for them, my endo included! But they are at least all Dr's and cite research throughout.

This diabetes forum has a lot of well-organised info about the keto diet:

http://www.diabetes.co.uk/keto/

It will take some reading!

The keto diet is used in epilepsy, diabetes and other conditions (though I don't know whether there have been clinical trials). I'd have thought there'd be authoritative NHS info for those patients somewhere.

Interesting to see on that page that they suggest it has been used to treat Lyme's disease too. No references unfortunately but:

"Lyme disease damages the brain by producing profound inflammation. Ketones may help alleviate some of the post-Lyme symptoms thanks to their significant anti-inflammatory effects.

Ketones bring down inflammation by reducing levels of cytokines – a commonly elevated inflammatory marker found in the brain of people affected by Lyme."

I put the Dr Atkins book in my amazon cart. :) I have realized i am an emotional eater. I tried Keto for a while and fell off the wagon. I am amazed at folks that are able to do this. I would like to find a plan and be able to stick to it.
interesting quotes above @ryan31337 . are you following the New atkins?

I have just read two comments detailing the dangers of the keto diet on the other thread. I won't be trying the diet. Too risky.

Good idea to sound a note of caution, Trish!

I recommend that anyone who is considering this diet does their homework, as I'm doing. This is why it's important to get good books and find good websites, and then to do some checking on PubMed about key facts, and then weigh risks vs benefits for your own situation.

Ideally, one would perhaps do this under medical supervision.

I recommend this one:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1...=1936608391&linkCode=xm2&tag=wwwthepaleomo-20

to understand the science as to why low carb high fat is helpful for healing and I think that the autoimmune diet is more suitable for us as it heals the leaky gut. The normal paeo diet is not very good imo as it is too high in protein for us. There are many keto and paleo diets.

Low carb might not suit those with adrenal and thyroid problems. They may have to eat more carbs than they want until the body has healed some.

The strictest autoimmune one is the elimination/provocation one on FB where many are having a lot of success.

Can you point us in the direction of info about the autoimmune diet please.
