I recall some years ago, some poor sod was out camping in the USA, and got infected, probably by a flea from a small mammal, yes the plague is endemic to parts of the USA.
the person got septicaemic plague, that is, when it goes into the blood stream, rather than the lymph nodes (normal), or lungs (pneumonic), fastest killing variety, luckily they survived but lost fingers toes etc as result :/

hence suitable insect repellent is a good idea and watching where your camp site is set up.
