Has anyone had success with colchicine? What were the side effects that you experienced?

I have a lot of inflammation, and I think that if I can bring the inflammation down, my pain will be reduced.. I have joint pain and sinus / throat swelling. My goal is to address the underlying cause(s) and change diet and do methylation protocol, but I need help w pain in the mean time. Tramadol was great until it pooped out.

thanks

I have a ton of inflammation pain, too. Have not tried cochicine, but methylation and a grain-free, low-histamine diet have helped a lot.

Hi ebethc. I have heard about people being helped with colchicine so I asked my specialist about it recently. He said one would have to be very careful with dosing and that it could be dangerous.

Have you asked a doctor about Celebrex or some other anti-inflammatory? A lot of people I know seem to be on Celebrex lately...

Colchicine is useful for gout and some rare genetic diseases but is pretty hopeless as a general anti-inflmmatory. At levels that produce any effect you are very likely to have diarrhoea and quite likely awful diarrhoea! It has more or less been given up even for gout. High doses are quite seriously toxic.

@Butydoc, did you have concerns about toxicity at the 6/9 mg doses you used?

The doses seem high compared to the daily doses for gout etc which are more in the 0.6-1.2 mg range.

Hi Ema,

You are correct, 6-9mg colchicine is a very high and probably a toxic dose. My bad, I forgot the period in front of the 9. I was actually taking .9mg/day. No obvious side effects. My liver enzymes were becoming elevated and my creatinine clearance with decreasing. I stopped the colchicine, but that did't change my numbers. Only when I stopped the Valcyte did my numbers return to normal.

Best,
Gary

@NilaJones - what's your methylation protocol?

thanks
Trial and error :).

I can't handle very much B12. It's taken me 2 years to work up to 3mcg (not mg) per day. But even that tiny dose has helped enormously.

I'm currently getting my folate from 400mcg folinic acid, which I find less harsh then methylfolate.

I'm experimenting with taking B vitamins individually, after years on a Thorne multi.

i take zinc, copper, magnesium, vit K, vit E, iron, fish oil, eat lots of potassium, etc.

I'm currently taking 1.2 mg colchicine along with valcyte and plaquenil. I am doing better than I was on valcyte alone, but that's not saying much. I'm still housebound, although I'm starting to have more good days and less brainfog. I need to force myself to stay on the couch even when I don't feel like it.

My liver enzymes are slightly elevated. I had some gut issues at first but they weren't anything I couldn't deal with.
