Imperial College now offering PCR XMRV testing

That makes sense Gracenote, very well articulated. I would be surprised if it's a different lab due to the wording that CBS pointed out. Also the fact that they are using PCR. The Japanese must have come up with a serology test because they have already tested their blood supply and a PCR is not reliable to get a 100%. Normally it goes PCR, then culture then serology. Dr. Mikovits said "Rachael will kill me but the serology test should be out next month", I extrapolate from these two things that it probably takes about 3 to 6 months to get everything in a row to create a serology test.

So why would the Kings College be offering PCR???? Why not wait for a good serology test to come out and then license it???? They have to know that the Americans are close, so what's the point. This isn't related to any of the studies, so I picked it up that they are trying to control testing in the UK????

Course my thinking can be very convoluted some days.

I do relish the idea of another IC lab being the first to debunk Wessley's PLoSOne study. Especially after all of the bluster about contamination and poor lab practice, no XMRV in the UK, and so on.

If I was in the UK, I don't know that I'd run right off to the IC of all places to get tested.

This is from the Imperial College XMRV Test Request Form.

Please send one 4.5ml EDTA Vacutainer to: Dr Steve Kaye, Molecular Diagnostics Unit, 4th floor Medical School Building, St. Marys Hospital, Norfolk Place, London W2 1PG. The shipper is responsible for packaging the sample in accordance with current guidelines for the shipment of pathology specimens. Note we will only accept requests from doctors or clinics, not directly from patients.

I wonder if someone like Judy or Nancy would like to contact our new friend Steve and find out what's going on.

The Molecular Diagnostic Unit (MDU) specialises in providing fast, accurate diagnostic tests for the management of infectious and genetic diseases. Our CPA-accredited unit uses the latest technology and techniques to provide an unparalleled service to national and international customers. We are constantly researching and improving our methods to remain ahead of the field in diagnostic testing.

Dr Steve Kaye
Senior Virology Research Officer

Professor Myra O McClure
Professor of Retrovirology

I'm just putting it together that Steve was one of the authors of the UK study. This all has me scratching my head. More than usual, I mean.

And this was in Science.

But some scientists, including Coffin and McClure, fear that the Viral Immune Pathology Diagnostics clinic (VIP Dx) took advantage of that hunger by offering the $650 diagnostic test for XMRV, 300 of which have been administered so far and which already has a 4 to 6 week backlog.

Coffin doesn't bother me though, he's a solid scientist, looking for the truth.

Is there enough information in the statement to tell if maybe they have modified their technique from when they did the original study?

If they are using exactly the same technique then it's pretty evil what they are doing. If they have improved on the technique and are really trying to offer a legit test, then that's actually pretty decent of them.

Can anyone pick up any clues from the info we have so far?

BTW, good find Kati

Coffin was referring to the Coordinated Diagnostics test, not the VIPdx test. They tried to make it seem that McClure and Coffin are "on the same page", a bit of misinformation IMO.

If they have improved on the technique, they would have to admit that the technique used in the study was poor

I suspect science missunderstood Coffin, because of McClure. Then she goes ahead and does the same thing!

Yeah, that's pretty much what I am saying. If they admit they were wrong and actually join the good fight, then I have a lot of respect for them.

But I seriously doubt it. And if they are offering a test that they know will turn up only negative results then someone over there has to get the word out to anybody not aware of the details. However, anyone who is aware of XMRV is probably also aware of the IC study, so maybe there is nothing to worry about.

It occurs to me that once it is clear that XMRV IS found in UK, the government and its psychiatrists may need to send those claiming to have ME to be tested for XMRV. What better lab than the one that has "failed" to find it?
