Labour was socialist, most Americans have poor experience of what that truly means, Russia etc went ot hell because they had no background of democracy and human rights, hence Western vs "Eastern" Socialism are so very different.

Alas, here, too many Labour local councils are very corrupt scumbags, they've been in power too long, they think they can get away with anything as folk won't vote them out :/
Much as I despise the Tories, always having one party in power is *bad*.

However, tony Blair and co were scumbags, they sold out to the corporates, "New Labour" is like some US Democrats

Liberals actually had some good stuff as a minor party their local candidates often worked hard for recognition/support so found many of them more effective for their constituents. used to be more like some US Democrats (as Democrats vary a lot)
But their latest leader, Clegg, is indeed, a sh*t easting horsefly :p ("Clegg" is a colloquial name for horsefly here, lol)
totally sold the party out for power.

there's maybe a dozen to 20 MPs of any use in parliament, including maybe 1 or 2 Tories. Rest, are so corrupt as to point they should be in jail: expenses, setting up contracts for companies they then go to work for ("work", there's a joke, they show up for a meeting every few months for £50,00 to £200,000 a year! cause they sold contracts)

Bloody hell UK beneficiaries have been slammed hard.....we havnt got this bad yet but they are trying incrementally.
We have MMP voting with our govt.... National party in at the moment. Our Labour party is weak as they agree with half of what national are doing so their vote got split with greens.
Seems like everywhere you don't have a party that has policies you want to go with...Labour have lost their vision and out of touch with general society....it will be interesting to see if a new type of party springs up for the average person(now known as the working poor) and people who need welfare.....Its like we have become disenfranchised or dispossessed.
Even what was known as working class are seriously struggling as well to have what we used to value as necessities.
I hope peoples families do riot, UK styles riots.
I wish labour would sort their s**t out here they have lost their true values in my country I couldn't vote for them last time.
Thoroughly fed up with Nats.
Do you in the UK think there will be a change in Govt at all next election?

As I see it, just about every party I can see in any country I look has lost its way. Its a sign of our times. Its happened here too. It takes real leadership to set things right, and statesmen, people of vision, resolve and intelligence are few and far between.

Our Labor party lost its way. At least some in our Liberal party here think the UK DWP/ATOS reforms are the way to go.

There was an historian a few years back I saw interviewed on TV who said these things go in cycles. Things get very bad, dire or catastrophic for many, and then there is a huge social backlash and it takes generations for the types who are responsible to get any real power again. Unfortunately, if this is right, we are living in the bad times before the social correction.

Unfortunately I am not sure this is a correct analysis. Today we face the New Eugenics Movement, called the Biopsychosocial movement. which is saying largely the same things the Eugenics people did. Yet times are different, and I do not know if it will cycle back to better, given the world is heading for multiple crises in the coming decades, some of which we have never faced before in the entirety of history.

nyeah we've had re-run of Zulu and Boer Wars (afghanistan and Iraq), now we have financial mayhem, austerity (Depression and 1930 Germany, as I've said it was NOT hyperinflation that got the Nazis in, it was Austerity which came later)
we may have skipped WW1, but WW3 is on the way. resource wars over food and water....

Neoliberal SCUM, corporate Fascists. they drape themselves in a "soft" flag, talk about economics without a clue, useless diplomas with no experience, right social upbringing with no mixing with "plebs" and pain, etc etc...
they take a mix of things and pretend to be "men for all seasons", or more like, "an orifice for every use" :p
See Ed Milliband, UK Labour leader, complete useless twat, spins like a weathervane in whatever way the wind blows...and sells out everything Labour was about

I do feel bad about leaving England with their ultra right wing non-choices for continuation of demonising the poor and sick while propping up their mates in the financial "industry".

But I'm all for shifting the border a bit to accommodate anybody who wants to join us in our much fairer future.

Perhaps a little impractical.
There has not yet been a proper socialist government, anywhere.
I don't know what we'd have in Scotland, voting for parties will happen after the Independence vote.

But it's unlikely to be Tory.:balloons:

Frankly, what is needed is devolution for the south east of England. (London)
Leave the greedy "elite" with nobody left over to make their piles of cash in the bank for them, nobody left to demonise and abuse...

as has been shown, losing the Scottish MPs wouldn't change things much for England, Thatcher's lot gerrymandered the hell out of the boundaries.
And New labour and Dems are just Tories without the balls, personal wealth, connections or sufficient psychopathy to be outright or honest bastards :p

if you want to see what Gerrymandering can do, look at the USA....actual proportion of voters has bugger all to do with who gets office in many places and the geographical boundaries show this, absolutely insane higgledy-piggledy districts hovering up specific streets etc to get specific voting types
it's sham democracy as the power interests have warped it all, surely you can see that?
as I said, having one side or another too much is bad, and actually, we need RID of "party" politics, for so many reasons.
Democracy By Lottery is the only answer.

and if you love the Tories, welcome to them, when they throw you in the gutter or crematoria, don't say you weren't warned :p
or as my Granny would say "May joy be with you, and a drum at yer arse!" (and that's not meant insulting, just "neener neener ish", lol, life would be too damn boring without "difference" and acting like big kids)

The surest way to see the rise of an extreme government is in response to an almost-as-extreme government. The backlash can put people in power who are even worse, just because they claim to have answers. That in part is how the current UK government got in - a claim to answers, where nearly all they had was ideological policy. What will the next UK government be like?

UKIP fits that picture. Like Tories tripping on bad drugs.

If I could guarantee that nobody else would - I would suggest not voting at all. But that's what happens now - most people don't vote and so the twat's get into power.

This next election I believe internet voting will be permitted for the first time ever. Should be fun - if it works - and might increase the voting rates. It could mean - could mean - more votes for those who are not wearing blue and 'I love Maggie' badges. But those people are seldom as obvious these days - and Nigel Farrage (UKIP) is a complete prat who I wouldn't give elbow room.

Best bet is to careful scrutinise your local MP candidates - don't worry quite so much about the party - and try and determine if he/she will do a good job of representation of local issues. Of course you are screwed if they then resign, or you move, or then renege on election promises (which they all seem to do to one degree or another): but I cannot not vote.

Not voting just rubs me up the wrong way. But that's only because I value my right of voting - even if it means little... :ill:

I think being seen to vote is important. In the UK middle class older people tend to vote and governments look towards them when setting policies. If the voting balance were better then maybe governments would have policies designed to benefit wider groups. For example, if the government knew all the people trying to claim ESA, DLA, PIP were going to vote they would possibly revise their policies. But it is well known the poor and those on benefits are less likely to vote and hence seem to count less in policy making.

Well as my granny would say "Houl yer wheest ya sleekit wee skitter or I'll skelp your arse" - and I'll bet she was bigger than your granny;)

Anyway best of luck with 'Alex the Fish' and 'Wee Jimmy Krankie'. Hope they live up to your expectations. We're stuck with Francois Hollande FFS!
