Abstract

Drawing on the results of a study examining the use of Second Life as a platform for social support by people with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), the authors posit that virtual architecture needs to be designed to be inclusive to people with cognitive impairments. The ME/CFS Centre in Second Life allowed people who were socially isolated to forge social support systems across geographical distances. However, technological issues interfered with the development of participants’ senses of community within the virtual space of the ME/CFS Centre. These difficulties with the designed landscape reveal that theorizations, and applications, of geography and disability, and inclusive web design, need to extend to the ways that virtual architectural structures are designed and furnished-if these spaces are to be inclusive.

I really like the idea of using 2nd life for meeting upo with other PWME, but feel overwhelmed with the idea of trying to figure it all out. Perhaps a post/article by someone who is familiar with it would be a good idea? I feel so isolated where I am and don't know anyone in my area with M.E.

Good idea. It would be quite complicated to write an article on it, but it would be worth it.

There is an entire section of second life devoted to instructing those with disabilities, called Virtual Ability Island. It has detailed tutorials, and at one point a bell you could ring to get help from volunteers. I haven't been there in years though.

If you have ever played a 3D character based computer game then second life is easy.

Installing second life is easy. Go to secondlife.com and download, then install.

Troubleshooting sound issues can be hard, if you want to speak. You also need headphones if you want to listen and speak, as speakers will cause feedback when your mic is on. We have someone in the support group who is very good at troubleshooting sound issues, and there is also a meditation group.

Second life can be like holidaying without leaving home, if you ever want to explore. There are even underwater gardens. Some of us go to virtual clubs, but I find it too exhausting. One of us is a virtual DJ at some clubs. Some areas are best avoided, and most of these have an R rating which you cannot go to unless you set permissions that way.

Light/visual issues can be a problem. Some cannot handle the graphics. This is aided by setting the time of day to midnight, so there is no sun, and leaving it there.

Very old computers might not run it. It also requires broadband or faster internet speeds.

There are lots of members of the ME/CFS group there. Most will be willing to assist anyone who wants to come along.

Mostly we run it just like a chat, as many cannot handle sound and you can always go back and reread chat, but you can't do that if you miss a voice message.

There are events too, including Xmas dances and often something for May 12. There is also an art gallery with exhibits from people with ME or CFS, plus a few information sources but I don't know all the refinements as we moved to a new venue last year, and I don't know what the builders made.

If you see a guy with a small fire breathing dragon on his right shoulder, and a tiny ghostly dragon on his left shoulder, that's my avatar. People can look and dress how they want (but clothing is not optional except for R rated areas) and one of our current members is a giant gryphon, another is a tree person.

There is a facebook page on the ME/CFS group here: https://www.facebook.com/ME.CFS/info

Stuff like second life scares me...

I had a mate who got far too sucked in to World of Warcraft. They were healthy, but spent less time out of the house than I did. I think they eventually broke free... but they lost a few years to it.

'Socialising' on-line is a weird thing, and I'm not sure how truly satisfying it can be. I never really liked chatting on the phone either though, so maybe I'm just less into the sort of socialising which is practical for the poorly.

It is free to download, and it downloads it to your usual browser download folder.
If you can't see it then search your computer for "Second_Life".
The file name will be something like: "Second_Life_3_6_13_284995_i686_Setup"

I'm shortly going to post some comprehensive instructions for getting started.

@Bob thanks!

I had a quick loo over at second life yesterday and it looks way too complicated and technical for my brain!! I will read the links anyway and maybe save it for a summer project - i'm currently studying and I cant cope with any more brain output!
