@Womble Sorry, I thought I had given you this link before . Link´s in Swedish wouldn´t work so well :).
http://www.yshield.com/pdf/YSHIELD-EN-ShieldingFabrics.pdf

Thank you Helen.

Well Germany, at least now we are getting a bit closer to the United States :)

Are you suggesting that Germany is the best source, or do you know of a USA company that might sell good shielding fabric that is non-flame-retardant and won't hurt my MCS?

Everyone mentions lessemf.com but I'm not yet convinced they are the industry leader when it comes to shielding fabric, there might be other places in the USA.

Anyone know of this?

Okay, so I didn't sleep AT ALL last night, due to an nearby activated wireless source.

This is getting very serious, probably need to buy something this week.

Lets just take a quick poll, which of these would be BEST for sleeping at night?

1. Canopy
2. Protective Clothing
3. Faraday Cage
4. Grounding Sheet (probably not this one)

I'm not really clear on the difference between a canopy and a faraday cage at the moment, are they the same thing?

Will all 3 of these block EMF AND RF?

@Womble

A canopy with the special mat of shielding fabric is a faraday cage. If affordable a canopy is practical as you will have space to move inside.

Shielding clothes could work, but it is difficult to wear without holes in the outfit that will let radiation in ( hmm how to explain..)

A grounding sheet will not shield, but might have other benefits.

What is best depends on what shielding effect the fabric has. I am sorry I can´t guide you. I think you have to send an e-mail to the companies that sell the fabrics or the canopy. The first priority for you must be that it is without the non-flame retardant. Then I think there will only be one left; was it Swiss-Tulle or something like that.

If you google Swiss-shield I think you will find retailers on the Internet. Did you search EMF sites in US?

Magnetic fields are not shielded with a canopy made of shielding fabric. But if you know the source of MF you usually can move from that, or move the source...(radios with an alarm are common sources to strong MF close to heads). Someone else can probably tell he physics about distance and exposure.

Hope you will get more help from others and that you will find a solution very soon. All the best!

Or go one better, and set up a complete Faraday cage using this electrically shielding cloth, like this woman here. A cloth Faraday cage is a very effective way of cutting out pretty much all EMF.

I'd like to contact the woman in this video, does anyone know her email?

!

So essentially, a Faraday cage is nothing more then a piece of shielded cloth that you can wrap around yourself using any number of different methods?

There is nothing more technical to it then that? :)

So the Faraday Cage only stops RF signals from wi-fi and cell phones?

That is good news actually, because that is the REAL PROBLEM. Like you said, most EMF sources can just be turned off at night.

I was told that if you don't ground a faraday cage, it will not shield against the low frequency radio waves, is this true?

Thank you Helen, you've been VERY helpful, I would give you an award if I could :)

Thank you @Womble for your kind words. Glad if I can share some experiences in this difficult situation for you.
Unfortunately I havn´t knowledge in physics, but I have also seen that they who have are too teorethical sometimes.

I think the first answer is yes. And it only stops RF-signals. You can´t e.g. use a radio or a cellphone in a wellfunctioning
canopy.
Canopies of shielding fabrics are not supposed to be grounded. What I have heard from people is that they are good enough even if they don´t shield against all kinds of radiation. Try to choose a fabric and then ask people here, maybe @Hip, about technical facts according to data from the retailer.

If you could rent or borrow devices that you could use to detect WI-FI, DECT phones, sources of magnetic fields and electric fields a.o. with, you could get a good picture of the exposure and try to find solutions.
I have three useful devices that I can detect different kind of sources with. Don´t ask me to describe them :)...

If I had the money to spend I'd buy one of those canopys that lessEMF sells that goes over the bed plus I'd combine that with grounding sheets.

I am sorry to bump in here, though my problem is very linked to the electrical thing. And perhaps folks that are interested by this subject will be of some help.
I am having a nightmare with the central air-iconditionning of the neighbourghs we live above. (in fact all the appartments here run their air conditionning appliances, but there is only one that is driving me MAD).
Of course, there is a terrible noise which is one of the problems - and because of the hyperacusis, one among all of our M.E symptoms - but I suppose there is also a problem of electric radiation of something like this.

When the neighbours turn of the device, I become to have terrible headaches, even if it is for a short time. Those headaches are literaaly unbearable, like my brain is frying. Then I have some uncontrolled muscles spasms (seen by hubby) on the face and the scalp. I feel like I am on the verge to explode.

The problems doesn't come from the external unit of the air -conditionning which has been seen by a specialist. I don't know what to do, as I have to escape from the appartment, go to the yard and it is december and I am freezing. I did it several days just in order to survive. At the moment the neighbours are OK to stop the device but not for a long time. If someone here has an advice , I will be very very happy.

Life has turned to hell with this, on the top of all the M.E plague!
We just moved in last month (and so didn't know the electrical environment here), in order for me to breathe a little outside in the yard, as I am stucked at home with a wheelchair...

Thanks in advance
Hanna

Shalom Hanna!

I think the problem there is EMF, you are too close to the magnetic field.

When you move further away from the air conditioning unit, do you feel much better?

Can you sleep further away?

Maybe someone else has a suggestion for you? (I'm still having a lot of trouble solving my own difficulties)

Hey Helen,

I looked over the PDF file you sent me.

It sounds like the Silver Tulle could be used for canopies, but it also sounds like the Naturell would work just as well. New Daylite is also listed as their most popular fabric.

There are a lot of fabrics listed, do you have a preference?

Do you think I should order different kinds of materials to experiment, or would that be too expensive?

Maybe I should just call the manufacturer and ask them.

I am having a challenging time figuring this all out - but that link shows the 'quiet zone retreat' for $329

Thats reasonably priced - that says 100% blocked - but i think i am missing something...

does anyone understand the downsides to this product?

Its one of those times when I would be more than happy for someone to tell me just buy this this and this.

I will post if I get to grips with it and can share something more useful

:)

Best

I'm glad I read this thread. It's given me more incentive to learn more about it. For any of you that have read or listened to Dave Stetzer on a podcast, have you tried something simple that he suggests like putting your feet, either barefoot or with socks on, on a strip of aluminum foil on the floor for just a minute numerous times of the day and before going to bed? If so, any positive effects from it?

Seems I'm being a sponge to EMF with wi-fi in my house and with my laptop and a printer in my bedroom! For now atleast I"ll take the easy steps of powering these units off before I go to bed.

Edit: I meant to say unplug...not just powering off the untis

Hi Womble,

I have to move at a fair distance (20 meters) to stop the "frying brain" symptom. But inside, there is no safe place. Then it takes me more than a day to return to my previous situation. The blood pressure continues to be sky high for me (generally I have a bit lowish one), tachycardia etc... for a day or two after beeing exposed to this air conditionner.
Sleep has been more problematic since this episode. :(

I read recently that EMF sensitivity is a result of high levels of heavy metals in our bodies. Not sure what to make of that. Thoughts anybody?

If you had that much metal content you'd have zero EMF problems, as you'd be a fossilized corpse.

The topic of electrosensitivity is somewhat charged. We have an odd disease and are clearly affected by things which have zero impact on a healthy person, and it's at least conceivable that weak EMF is one of them. But there are also effects of believing something to be harmful. Normal stress and activity knock us out, so it's no surprise that being around something we believe is a hazard causes actual sickness. The effect is there but the cause may not be the expected one.

I live in an apartment with someone who insists that microwaves make her sick immediately upon exposure, so she doesn't own a microwave oven.
She talks on a cell phone several hours per day, and the apartment is on the top floor of a building with 2 cell sites in the roof. (The roof deck is wood and doesn't block the signal.)

For some reason, it is just impossible for people to accept that EMF sensitivity is real.

For the life of me, I cannot understand why people would be this skeptical and sometimes even mocking of this.

If we can build an electronic device that can send signals from outer space into people's homes from thousands of miles away, why is it so hard to believe that technology that powerful could be harmful to certain people?

I feel like I'm living in the times when they thought the world was still flat.

Ok, leaving soapbox now :)

On a positive note, I think this thread has been very helpful in leading me towards certain possible solutions, thanks to everyone who gave me advice!!!

I'm very sorry to hear that.

Can people suggest something helpful for Hanna?

Perhaps some of the blocking EMF methods here would help her?

Try aluminum foil on your ceiling or walls to block the EMF?

Painting your walls with EMF resistant paint?

Try some EMF resistant clothing?

I am also in the process of experimenting with these solutions, so I'm the same boat you are in.
