Looking for a good doctor in Brisbane

Looking for an open minded doctor that leans primarily toward natural therapies. One with thorough understanding of endocrinology. One that has had at least a handful of CFS patients. A great personality would be a bonus.

Please do not recommend Deed, he's overrated and not good at all.

Sorry Boost I can't help, but if you do find someone please share. I am looking for a doctor who will do a range of testing beyond the basics, that I don't have to beg for.

My understanding of dr emerson is that he is extremly expensive, especially for an aussie doc, i have heard initial visit in the $600 range. At the end of the day know doc has the answer for everyone. I dont know if there would be any other docs in brisbane outside of deed and emerson who understand cfs/me, im sure there must be a couple more??
If your just after testing deed will do them if u ask, as for treatments most docs would have their hands tied and things like antivirals arent covered by PBS so no matter who u see your going to have to pay top dollar for those types of treatments.

Another way to find a doc who is into natural therapies/endocrinology etc is to email a few compounding pharmacies as its these types of docs who write prescriptions for compounding pharmacy medicine, worth a try.

Hi Boost,

I hope you will read my comments with an open-mind.

When we begin to look for an open minded doctor, we can leave ourself open for an open and empty pocket, there are many open-minded doctors who love the rattle of the “dollar” sign continuously rolling over, like the rollers of a poker machine that keeps on paying out continual jackpots; and I say that “without prejudice” to those open minded doctors who have 100% compassion, and are dedicated to their practice and study.

The remainder lacks any compassion, and as soon as you try to lead them into an area of the unknown, or taboo areas, or you may shake their tree, they will drop you like a ton of bricks, and throw you to the wolves. You usually end up with a box full of supplements that probably cost you $400 or more and then every month another $200, and you end up with colourful urine and no more healthier than you were when you started.

Some doctors who may lean slightly toward natural therapies, do bulk bill, and you won’t have to cough up big dollars. They keep within the realms of the AMA, and pharmaceuticals so they won’t get slapped on their wrist or be made an example of. I have seen a few competent doctors, who primarily lean toward natural therapies, end up being tarred and feathered, and closed down by TPTB.

I knew a couple of such doctors, who preferred natural therapies and they were hounded, and hounded, but they kept to their principles and beliefs, and sadly they were destroyed by TPTB.

Here is a list of Endocrinologists in the Brisbane area:

Dr Clare Boothroyd Specialist Practice Sunnybank/Greenslopes

Dr Grant Cracknell, Wickham Terrace, Brisbane

Dr Gregory Hockings Specialist Practice Greenslopes

Dr Peter Hill Wickham Terrace, Spring Hill

Dr Elizabeth J Nye Specialist Practice Greenslopes

Dr Christine H Rowland Specialist Practice Greenslopes

Dr Joanne Shaw Wickham Terrace, Chermside/Spring Hill

Dr Christopher R Strakosch Specialist Practice Greenslopes

Dr Wagenaar Everton Park

Dr Barry Ryan Aspley Medical Centre Aspley (*Have been recommended by other people!)

Dr Greg Emerson Aspley Medical Centre Aspley (*Have been recommended by other people!)

There are so many beliefs in what causes CFS/ME, including FMS, and we pop so many pills that we rattle, but we are only trying to overcome the symptoms, and not eliminate the cause. The medical fraternity states that the cause is unknown, and many believe it to be some environmental factor, which is correct. But, the one causation factor is sitting there in the background and as obvious as a pimple on an elephant, but sadly is being completely ignored. If you have been suffering CFS/ME as long as I have (since 1969), then you will be popping pills for the rest of your life, and all to no avail.

Many believe it’s a neurological, biological, genetic, infectious and psychological illness, but the etiology isn’t really understood, because of these multiple beliefs, and the lack of any diagnostic laboratory test or biomarker for CFS/ME.

When our symptoms become worse we may then be diagnosed FMS, or MCS, or GWS or even Lyme’s Disease; and the most crippling of all---MS.

I have suffered and researched CFS/ME since 1969. Between 1984 and 1989 I discovered that electromagnetic radiation and fields from power lines, house wiring, and electronic and electrical equipments and devices were the known factor in many studies conducted by scientists on well-known and unusual illnesses that were known in the 1970s. But, all that information has seem to have disappeared, and can no longer found in archives.

In 1989, I stopped using our electric blanket, removed the electric clock/radio from the bedside, replaced the fluorescent tubes in the bed-head with standard light globes, and moved the bed-head at least a foot from the wall were the house wiring was running to the power points behind the bed-head. My symptoms reduced considerably.

In 1997, we moved away from our high-density power lines, to an island country environment, and within no time, all my symptoms disappeared. In 2000, we moved back to our home area, and we began a caravan tour around Australia. My symptoms began to return over the next few weeks, but the symptoms were strange and slightly different. I discovered when my wife turned “ON” her newly purchased mobile phone that I felt a strange sensation all over my body. And as my wife left the phone turned “ON”, 24/7, my symptoms became worse. We developed some ground rules, which worked very well. We travelled around Australia for 2 ½ years and in different caravan parks I suffered worse than other caravan parks, due to the availability of mobile phone towers, and the other caravaners use of mobile phones. Since 2005, wireless technology began to expand, and my symptoms became worse, and no natural therapy would help. But, there is always a “but’, I did notice that when I missed out taking my supplements for a few days, I did feel lousy, therefore, the supplements were helping me to keep on an even keel.

On the 20th August 2010, the National CFIDS Foundation (NCF) announced a link between Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Low Level Radiation Exposure. Their research found a relationship between ciguatera poisoning, STAT-1 and myelodysplasia, as well as leukemia. They said that early evidence also suggested that some type of catalyst was potentially involved in this disease process, because of some very unique characteristics they identified during the course of their research, and what emerged from their research was the potentiality of low level radiation to act as the catalyst to evoke a specific response that fit the profile for their CFS/ME patients. From their research and study they believe that their findings were very important that low-level radiation not only adversely impacts STAT-1, but it has also been found to cause myelodysplasia as well as myeloid leukemia.

Why this hasn’t been passed onto the public is beyond any comprehension.

Boost, I am saying this, because the public needs to: be aware of the health risks and know of the harmful effects of EMR and EMF of the wireless technology of today. The airways are being flooded with harmful “electrosmog”, and I have much knowledge and understanding of electronics as I worked in the military communications field, and know the dangers of non-ionised radiation, and now know after all those years that I worked in an unhealthy environment that caused my CFS/ME. I retired from the military in 1980, and over time I discovered the dangers of the EMF emanating from our electric blanket, electric clock/radio, and fluorescent lights.

When I realized those electric appliances and devices were a health risk, moved away from the environment that was blasting me with EMF from the high-power power lines, and during the time from 1997-2000 when I lived in an EMR and EMF free area, and was healed. I realized then that EMR and EMF was a problem to me and was causing my CFS/ME. As soon as I returned back to our home environment in 2000, my symptoms began to return, and by 2007 I was suffering extreme CFS/ME, which my GP diagnosed as FMS. It was then that I realized I was suffering from some form of radiation sickness, and that was when I established that my symptoms of CFS/ME and FMS was no different to the symptoms of electro hypersensitivity (EHS).

Before you put yourself back onto the merry-go-round, consider what I have said, take account of it all, and make sure that your home is EMR and EMF free, such as: no DECT (cordless) phone; no wireless computer setup of wireless modem/router/mouse; no Wi Fi; and all mobile phones turned “OFF”, including Wi Fi baby monitors. The DECT phone and baby monitors are the most dangerous device every designed.

I’m just surviving, and there is no natural remedy that is going to give me a quick-fix, as this “electrosmog” has replaced the dangers of asbestos and passive cigarette smoking that were for fifty years declared as being harmless and safe, and is now banned in our State.

It has been shown by many medical researchers that wireless radiation and exposure does have an effect on: the blood brain barrier; our cells causing us to go into fight or flight response; our immune system; the health of people in the public and work place; and the health of children in schools with Wi Fi. The increase of sick people (children and adults) since the introduction of wireless technology in the home, schools, public place and work place must not be ignored.

The World Health Organization classified CFS/ME as a central nervous system disorder, and also classified wireless technology as “2B” carcinogenic. If that is so, then wireless technology can affect the central nervous system.

Something to think about Boost, but as I find it, commonsense is thrown out of the window, and doctors, medical science, and government officials ignore the common facts and evidence by fobbing it that they meet all the laid down safety regulations.

I live south of Brisbane.

I just dont understand where deed got his reputation. He said nothing that impressed me and it may seem like I have really high expectations but i dont. I didnt expect to walk out of there cured but nothing he said or did was any different from any other doc that would be covered completely by medicare. Yet no more than 15 minutes later i was out of pocket $150(total cost $220).

I thought maybe he would discuss latest treatments like GCMAF, discuss the mitochondria stuff, discuss success and failures of other patients, refer me to a gastro for my ibs. One thing that annoyed me particularly was he asked me if i play video games late at night. I do sometimes so I answered yes and he actually added that to my medical record. ARE YOU KIDDING ME... How is that relevant information? Going to turn my medical record into a joke. I guess my fatigue, IBS, joint pain, cog fog dizzynes could be attributed to late night game playing huh!!!

I brought in a list of blood tests i wanted done. Vitamin D, free t3, free t4, free testosterone and a few others. He proceeded to write all these numbers down on the paper. This will be 70, this 65, the total came to around $350. At first i was confused as to why he was casually telling me these numbers. So i said $350 for what? Medicare is covering these tests right? He said no and that medicare has changed. Can anyone confirm this? i haven't heard anyone else mention it and cant find any changes regarding blood tests coverage in a google search. It kind of annoyed me he didn't even ask if I was able to pay for such an expensive blood test, i guess when you charge $220 for 15 minutes you think money falls from the sky.

Thanks for the detailed reply wifi, i just skimmed over it as i the cog fog is bad tonight but i will re-read it when i can. The EMF thing i have read a few times over the years. It's really like being caught in a trap, im too god damn tired and weak to get out of the house and be away from all these electronics. I goto a 40" LCD, the computer i am on 6 hours a day, the tablet with wifi i use 20cm from my face for a couple of hours a day. if i got rid of all this shit i would have nothing to do but stare at a wall all day.

Just when you think shit cant get anyway worse, I've started waking up with pains in my spine and IBS has been so bad the last two days been tossing in bed all night. And now i got centrelink to deal with in January.

Thanks to all who replied.

Initial cost might be more but i only pay $85 for a consult and get $35 back on medicare. So your consults from now on should be $85 or $75 if on pension. Generally hormone tests etc u can atleast get one free test a year, i do. He use to bulk bill more tests but i think he is having the screws put on him for testing so much. I think he does/use to do alot more testing then the average GP so medicare are onto him. Maybe he bulkbills test for regular patients too?? Im sure he has alot of one off patients possibly like yourself? I tell him up front i cant afford paying for tests so he lets me know if they are freebies or not.

As for MAF he is holding off until theres more info on it, its my understanding that its hard to get maf into the country as there are customs restrictions on it and only dr lewis in melbourne is doing this at the moment but we dont know how he gets it through customs, he did say to me that he has a few patients seeing dr lewis for gcmaf.

I think if u want something out of the box u need to come straight out and ask him. He is open to antivirals, immune mods like immunovir, LDN and HRT like dhea and pregnenolone. Most of these treatments are expensive or hard to find. SO if ones tight on a budget he may not mention these treatments due to cost.

I have found his knowledge on cfs/me is very current, maybe it doesnt seem outstanding because we have alot of access to this info on PR here but if u picked any GP at random they wouldnt have a clue about the stuff he/we know. Atleast he is on the same page.

I know the regular consultation price with deed is $85. I just dont see the value in it, especially if his bulk bill testing is narrowed down. A lot of the tests I asked for are pretty standard. I haven't had free t3 and t4 done in 3 years, so it's not like I am abusing the system. Free testosterone, again standard... haven't had done in 18 months... as well as vitamin D.

When I went for my initial consultation with valerie cole on the gold coast who touts herself as some kind of CFS expert too, she charged $140 for her initial consult, but it was very in depth. I was there for 30 minutes, she asked many questions, wrote down many things. Briefly discussed other patients she treated. Discussed a couple of treatment methods, IV vitamins and biofeedback machine which seemed to have a lot of faith in. At this point I realised she wasn't the doctor for me as I have done my own research on those machines and came to the conclusion they are just bunk, so i didn't bother going back to her.

Her last words to me were "Don't worry, we will get to the bottom of this", which left me with the impression that even though I had no faith in her at least she was going to try her best. That's what I expect from an initial consultation, time and effort. I'm assuming that's the reason they charge the premium price for it. I've been to 3 other "CFS" doctors and all their initial consultations were far more in depth.

And when I say 15 minutes with deed, i am being generous, it felt more like 10 minutes, i should have timed it. I may as well have woken up that morning and flushed $150 down the toilet and went back to bed.

Hi Boost,

Again, my posting needs to be read with an open-mind!

The 21st Century is a very sad time, and has become a cesspool of man-made health problems that are being denied, and has opened the flood gates to the many malice, insidious, blood sucking practitioners of the medical and natural holistic profession. Once upon a time, we had our family doctor who was compassionate, understanding, knowledgeable, and was like an extended member of our family. They endeavoured to treat and find the cause of our illness, and never overcharged nor cover up the symptoms with unnecessary misuse of drugs and quackery like we see today. Greed is the essence of evil and feeds the spirit of wealth, mammon, and wannabees.

We have a gun-barrel held at our head in a “Catch 22” situation, and the gift of compassion and care that we knew in the 20th Century is no more. The many bad practices tarnish the few medical practices that have integrity and profession. The ungifted practitioners see themselves as “gods”, have no decency, and subject us to guinea pig experiments. Their ears are closed, their hearts are bound, and their hands are that fleece us of our life-savings. Trust between doctor and patient has flown out of the window, and if they can’t cure you in fifteen minutes by their corrupted words, then they will expel you from their classroom. They feed only “itchy ears” of the gullible with unfounded, worldly knowledge and science.

The so-called gifted healers gain their reputation from misinformation, and false recommendations and promotions, as they gather their corrupt few around them, and weave their spider web of deceit before your very eyes. They entice us by their silver-lined tongue, offering their magic potions of the fountain of youth. But, they never look healthy! They are not there for you and I, they are only there for their own ego. They don’t listen to your cry for help, with any compassion, as you look upon their face, they don’t look you in the eyes, they just keep writing with a small smirk upon their face, as they visualize their next trip to the snowfields in the Austrian or Australian Alps, or in Canada; or their next taxpayer’s trip overseas to attend a special gathering of other like-minded medical professions, and return armed with another new format to skim more money out of our pockets.

In the past fifty years, I’ve found no doctor who was prepared to listen, to discuss, or speak the TRUTH. Many are prepared to write you off as paranoid and delusional, suffering a form of schizophrenia or mental illness that would make the pharmaceutical companies happy.

Over the past four decades, I have been diagnosed with CFS, ME, FMS, IBS, and BMS, and the causation factor is unknown. They can say that it could be this, or that, or maybe this, but when it comes down to commonsense, it all sounds hairy-fairy. Since 1970 it has been known through military research that electromagnetic fields and radiation from any form of power sources, electrical equipment and devices, and electronic equipment and devices were causing many illnesses in the military forces.

We all know what is right and what is wrong, and I don’t need to be brainwashed and mind-controlled by unethical medical purposes, who are deliberately barking up the wrong tree.

I had an embarrassing incident with a top medical professor who specialised in the burning mouth syndrome. I was referred to this specialist by a closed-minded dentist. I explained to him that I had suffered burning sensation of the mouth and tongue, which become worse at night, soon after 11:30PM and continued for two or three days without any subsidence. I explained to him that I had constant dull pain throughout the mouth; aching and tingling teeth that were filled with amalgam; swollen tongue and lips; tingling and numbness of the tongue and particularly the tip of the tongue and mouth; bitter and metallic taste in the mouth; and dry and sore mouth, tongue and throat.

The specialist explained to me that he didn’t know what was causing BMS, but there were a number of beliefs of possible causes of BMS, such as: damage to nerves that control pain and taste; hormonal changes; the dry mouth could be caused by medicines or suffering from Sjögren’s syndrome or diabetes; nutritional deficiencies; oral candidiasis; a fungal infection in the mouth; acid reflux; poorly-fitting dentures or allergies to denture materials; anxiety and depression. All these beliefs sounded all great, but it’s a syndrome that just appears since wireless technology began.

And when I said to the specialist that I had neither of those possible causes, he appeared shocked that I should say that. I then said to him that I believe that the radiation from the wireless technology, particularly mobile phones and Wi Fi was the cause of my BMS. I then proceeded to explain to him my belief. I said that I believe a form of voltaic and galvanic action was taking place in my mouth, the same as the electrochemical process in batteries, which is referred to as “electrosis”. I explained that “electrosis” happens when an electro motive force (Emf) is brought to bear upon two conductive metals, such as the amalgam fillings (silver and mercury) in my mouth that were immersed in a solution (saliva). This electrochemical process produces a voltage-current flow. I then said that if this is so, then that is the reason from the metallic taste in the mouth as the metal ions were leeching out of the amalgam fillings poisoning mouth with silver and mercury that was causing my health symptoms in my mouth. You should have seen the look on his face, as anyone would think that I had slapped him. He basically ignored me and escorted me out of his surgery, never to see him again.

Boost when your doctor asked you if you play video game late at night, you should have asked him why, because he may be trying to establish why your symptoms are such, and he may also be aware of the EMR and EMF factor.

Your fatigue, IBS, joint pain, cog fog, and dizziness could be attributed to long-term and prolonged exposure to EMR and EMF from your computer and other ancillaries to your computer set-up, and power source. When playing games, are you using Wi Fi wireless or DVD games?

Medicare has made many cutbacks on prescribed drugs, but there is a possibility that he has a restraining order on him from Medicare because of his improper practice, and he is unable to authorize these tests. Maybe someone else can give you an answer to that.

Your “Cog Fog” is possibly caused by non-ionised radiation from your wireless technology, which also causes headaches, ringing in the ears, dry and sore mouth and throat, fatigue, joint pains, brain fog, forgetfulness, restlessness at night, back pain, dizziness, and IBS. I’ve lived with this for many decades, and have become worse over the past few years as my next-door neighbours have become wireless technology yuppies, and they radiate our home, 24/7. But, if I had the same set-up in our home, I would suffer ten times worse. I have disabled all wireless on my computers, modems, and routers, and are all connected via cable, and our home phone is cable.

LCD TVs radiate EMR and EMF, the plasma are worse. If your computer is wireless with a wireless modem and router, then you are cooking yourself with microwave emissions for six hours, and then another 2 hours on your Wi Fi tablet, no wonder you are suffering, and no wonder your doctor asked you that question.

If your wireless set-up is left turned “ON” all night and all day, including your mobile phone, then that is another reason why you are restless at night, back pains, and extreme IBS. Do you have a DECT phone, and an electric clock/radio beside you bed?

I can understand how you feel, but we need to take desperate measures when it comes to desperate health problems, and at the same time we need to change our ways and adapt to our desperate measures.

Sad as it is Boost, it’s going to get worse, as SMART metres are now being installed in most Qld power boxes, and SMART appliances are beginning to dribble into our country, and all such SMART devices have Wi Fi capability, which transmits 24/7 upon the unsuspecting public.

"Boost when your doctor asked you if you play video game late at night, you should have asked him why, because he may be trying to establish why your symptoms are such, and he may also be aware of the EMR and EMF factor."

doubtful, it would make no sense not to elaborate on that point if indeed thats what his focus was. And there would be no reason for him to emphasize "late at night." There was no EMF discussion at all, and this question was as far as he went with any queries regarding electronics use. He would have asked how many hours i use TV, computer etc... not if I'm a "late night gamer"...

I understand you having a passion for your beliefs regarding wifi/emf/emr but nothing is really conclusive at this stage. It's just a theory. You getting burning mouth at the same time as wifi popping up really doesn't prove more than a possibility among many others. You can find many coincidences in anything. He rattled off quite a few plausible possibilities himself, why didn't you find a single one plausible? (nerves, hormonal, sjogren syndrom, fungal infection, etc)

Believe me I am open minded, I have had many theories myself. The way you are convinced of your beliefs reminds me of a fellow named Russ that runs the herballure forums. You can basically take your entire post and substitute "wifi" for "mercury" he talks about amalgums, chemtrails laced with mercury, he even wears a filter mask during "spraying". He said after his mercury fillings were removed he had a period of 2 years of great health, but once chemtrail spraying started he got much worse again.

Ok, so I was there and you weren't and I am the one reading too much into it? OK late night gamer = EMF... I learned something today... I know if was going to gather EMF exposure information from someone I would ask questions like how many hours they spend using certain electronics, proximity to them etc..

I don't claim to have your level of knowledge on this issue. Even people with knowledge can draw incorrect conclusions.
There are scientists that are atheists and scientists that are christians. And laborers that are atheists and laborers that are christians. Both can't be right.

"You don’t want to listen, as in the case of your doctor, because you want your doctor to believe your beliefs, before he can heal you."

This really shows your tunnel vision. The fact that you equate a single question asked by the doctor to me not listening to EMF propaganda...

Don.t you think he would have advised me to limit computer use? Switch off wifi at night? use handsfree with phone?

The reason he asked is because he wanted to establish whether a habit like playing video games late at night is throwing sleep patterns off > causing bad sleep > contributing to or causing my condition. When the process is the other way, my sickness/insomnia is keeping me up late and if i wasn't playing computer games or watching a movie, i would just sit there doing nothing until i was able to sleep.

I could say the same for you and your doctor, you dont want to listen to him because you want him to believe your beliefs.

Hi Boost,

I originally answered your posting to help you, as I could see that you are a person in need, who needs an open-minded doctor, and it has nothing to do with beliefs. I'm not here to have a slanging match with you. I have explained in much detail in my previous comments. I believe that if you need to be more aware of life’s problems a lot more deeply than you are prepared to go, and by ignoring, or throwing stones at other people will not heal you. There is an old saying that you don’t bite the hand that feeds you.

This is the last time I will communicate with you, because I am very concerned about you and your health. I feel this because of my age, 76 years of age, and a great grandfather, who does concern himself for the health of other people.

The ball is in your court, so please have a look at these sites below of “The Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL)”, which is a leading European not-for-profit organisation who address the continuing environment affects on health in Europe, who endeavour to have policies changed to implement the protection of health and enhance people’s quality of life. Sadly there is no such agency or organisation in Australia.

WIFI- Excellent, Excellent post. The best I have seen on this website. Cheney in the US is doing a research project on this very idea.

Thank you,

Postings on EMR above are too lengthy and off topic.

Re Emerson. I have had dealings with him. He is very business-like, but sympathetic to the symptoms presented by cfs patients. He is also focussed. He will do very specific testing, including the right Vit D, etc.

However, in my case, and I assume in others, he referred me to get a series of tests and then, based on those results and some short of cheat sheet, he determined the causes of my illness. In my case he deduced there was persistent mycoplasma infection requiring specialized antibiotics, and mercury toxicity. Mercury toxicity is not directly tested, so there is no guarantee that is the problem.

His consultations and treatments were very expensive, consisting in the main, supplements which he himself sold. I found this a little unsettling, particularly as I could get most of them online at a fraction of the price. I simply could not afford to continue on that cost basis. His argument was that he could guarantee the quality and supply. Furthermore, I had too many questions regarding how he arrived at his diagnosis and at the effectiveness of his treatments, considering I had no improvement after several months.

I currently see Deed, and as boost said, I am underwhelmed with the guidance he is offering. However he is very sympathetic to patients is extremely supportive of any regime you would like to try. I can understand his stance somewhat, given the uncertainty of both testing and treatment outcomes in patients. One particular positive I have with Deed is that he allows consults over the phone at a cost of $40 roughly, with none of this reclaimable from Medicare. This is comparable to the costs of a personal consult, but without the expense and time of travelling.

Sorry Rusty, I didn't realise it was off topic because I was making comments on Boost had said to me. I was going to send it by mail to him, but had some problems with my mail box.

So what do you suggest?

I came to this thread looking for info on doctors in Brisbane, not info pages on EMR, so I guess for me this is what defines what is off-topic. Didn't mean to jump down your throat. :) I've gone off topic plenty of times myself. Just wanted to head off further posts. Many of us have cognitive issues and have trouble concentrating, so trying to wade thru reams of text for what we want to read is both tiring and frustrating, and can deter reading further into the thread.

Probably the easiest is to start a new thread on your topic - you should still be able to quote back to the initial statement.

Hi Rusty,

I can understand what you are saying, as I have been there to. As I said that I had explained things of my own case in trying to find a doctor to understand my multiple health problems, and it's not easy. And to be honest Boost problems are the same as mind.

I've reduce the size of my posting and sent the rest of that information to Boost by message.

Take care Rusty, and what is your exact diagnosis?
